Description
IMPROVED DRAGv 'FOR VESSELS.
GEORGE L. UPTON, 0F MILBRIDGE, MAINEJ Letters .Patent No. 60,287, dated .December 4, 1866. i
SPECIFICATION..
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. UPTON, of Milbridge, in the county of Washington, and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved mode of preventing ships or vessels, when at seain` storms and gales, from l l p paying off into the trough of the sea, where they roll and `labor so hard als to endanger `both the vesselland'all l l on board and I do hereby declare that `the following is a ,full and 'exact description thereof, reference being l had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of 'reference marked thereon.` l
The nature of my invention consists in an apparatus which when open shows six wings, ofanylengthland 1 width convenient to the size ofthe vessel for which it is to be used, and when letintothe Water the drift of the ,r vessel opens these wings, which serve as an anchor to bring the ship or vessel head to thesea and wind, inwhich 1 j "1 position she is not liable to be Atrippedlby the sea.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use m invention, I will proceed to describeits constructioli i l I and operation.
I construct my drag, as I term it, as follows, viz First, the shaft A, on theend of lwhich is secured ahub, l p l B, around which, at equal distances, are six hinges, C. The ends of the wings D are secured tothe hub Bby the hinges G. Upon the shaft A the slide E plays, to which slide, E, the ends 'of the braces F are securedby being bent into staples in the slide E. The other end of'the braces F are secured tothe wings by a double-` sta-pled hinge at the point G. These braces serve to hold the wings from spreading any further.than needful. l At the point G rivets secure the stapled hinge from drawing out of the wings, headed` on an iron-plate on the .p outside of the wings. h represents a. stop upon the shaft A, which prevents the slide Efroin moving any further l l l up the shaft. I represents lines extending from one Wing to the other, and secured byaJ thixnblein the endgofi said lines, I, to an oblong staple upon the end of the wings. J represents a ring on the'end of i the shaft A, to
which the vessels hawser can be bent. K represents a ring, to which a small trip line is to `be bent.; so, when. p, the drag is to be taken on board, by slackening the hawser and hauling on the trip line, the drag is reversed and l p and brought to close the wings, and can be easily managed and taken on board again. represents` the` l hawser; M represents the trip line; N represents a buoy and buoy line; O represents the drag closed and` as it` f p i is when stowed away.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isA
The lcombination of the shaft A, hub B, bevelled wings D, braces F, slide E, constructedsubstantially as` and for the purpose as specified. l
