SPECIFICATION- TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, QUINCY STODDARD, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson, andv State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful improvement in Machines for Rolling Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part.

of this specification.

My invention consists, first, in the combination of two pairs of swing rollers, so arranged as to be reversed in position, each pair being made up of a plain and a corrugated roller, by which means either round, half-round, or plain leather may be rolled; and second, in making the corrugated rollers with loose spools or dies, so that each pair of spools may be used independently of their fellows. i

the standards, are pivoted swing frames, C C, at the vproper distance apart, so arranged as to be reversed `in position at pleasure. These swing frames are respectively provided, at opposite ends, with a pair of rollers, D

D', the roller D being plain, while'D is provided with half-round corrugations, gradually increasing in size, as shown. The contiguous rollers may receive motion by any convenient arrangement of gearing. In the drawings they are shown as having pinions, c c, on one end, which gear when, brought together. This arrangement of the rollers is of much advantage where round and half-round as well as plain leather is to be rolled, as for instance in harness shops. By turning the two plain rollers together, as in fig. 1, dat straps or other plain leather can be run through in the usual way; by turning the two corrugated rollers together-,as in iig; 3, round leather for reins, 8vo., can be run through; and by turning one plain and one corrugated roller together, as in g. 4, half-round leather can be rolled. I thus combine inV one machine, and in a very compact form, what is accomplished by several in the old method. The corrugations in the rollers are made in separate spools or dies, b b, which slip freely and easily upon the shafts, D. In this manner the several spools are in a degree independent in their actionthat is, two or more operations may work at the same set of rollers, and still have control over those individual spools or dies which they employ; for by simply placing the finger uponV any one, it -may be held stationary for inserting or manipulating the leather, even while the roller itself is arbitrary in its motion. As soon as the leather is inserted, it has a tendency to press the opposite spools apart, and thus produces sufficient traction on the shaft to give them motion and run the leather through automatically. By this arrangement, also, if desired, the leather may be drawn through 4any one of the set of spools more rapidly than the others, or the motion of the Vroller itself by simply applying tension. i

The combination of two pairs of plain and'corrugated rollers D D resting in swing frames C C, so arranged that they may be turned to opposite positions to roll plain, round, or half-round leather, as herein set forth.

I also claim forming the corrugated rollers with the independent spools, b, operating in the manner and fori the purpose specified. l.
