EDWARD C. TROMBLY, OF PLATTSBURG, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 259,607, dated June 13, 1882.
Application filed February 16, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD G. TROMBLY, of Plattsburg, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Bending Wagon-Tire and other Bar Iron, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a top view of the machine having myimprovements applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a side view, and also an under view, of the adjustable roll-carrier forming a part of my invention. Fig. 3 represents an end elevation, and Fig. at a side elevation, of the machine with crank-gearing, rolls, and adjustable carrier all as improved by my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements in machines for bending tires and bariron, and has for its object a cheaper, simpler, and more effective machine for the purposes mentioned.
To enable others to make and use this improved machine, I will describe its construction and operation.
The machine is mounted on a bed or frame, which may be secured to a bench or block, and in the accompanyingdrawings is plainly shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The machine consists of a frame with three rollers, B, G, and D. The sides of the frame A are cast separately, and the two are connected and held in place by strong wroughtiron bolts. The rollers B and U are placed in the frame at different elevations, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and each of said rolls revolves readily in journal-bearings in the frame. To the roller 0 the gear-wheels F f, and to roller B the pinion G, are attached. The small shaft H, with crank I attached, has a pinion, h, which gears with wheel F to move roller 0 and roller B through the medium of the gears f and G, as shown in the drawings. The rear part of the frame is constructed with inclined upper faces, provided with ratchet-teeth J J, commencing directly over the shaft H and extending to the end or bottom of the inclined frame, as shown in the drawings.
(No model.)
The roller D is placed, in the journals d cl in the adjustable roll-carrier K, (shown in Fig. 2,) the carrier K being attached to the inclined rack -frame by hooks L L engaging with flanges on frame A and by ratchets M M engaging with teeth J J, as shown in the under view, Fig. 2, aforesaid. By these means the carrier is held securely in place, but is allowed to be readily adjusted to any required position by simply elevating the rear end of the roll-carrier, thus releasing the grasp of the ratchet-teeth and allowing it to he slid up and down, as required.
The roll-carrier K may be put in place or removed in virtue of the slotsN N in the flanges of the inclined portion of the frame, as shown in the drawings.
The crank I is arranged for use upon lighter work, as shown; but when more rapid movement is desired may be changed to the squared shaft 0 to turn rolls(] and B and gear-wheels attached, roll-carrier K being adjusted as desired.
In practically operating this machine the tire or bar of iron to be bent is placed upon the adjustable roll D, the end passing under roll 0 far enough to rest securely upon roll B. Then, with the adjustable roll so placed up or down upon the inclined rack as to form the L and teeth M M, and the geared rolls, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The inclined frame provided with ratchetteeth J J and side flanges, in combination with the adjustable roll-carrier K, having hooks L L and teeth M M, and the geared rolls B 0', substantially as described.
EDWARD 0. TROMBLY.
