` IMPROVEMENT 1N WATER nLnvAross.
j p SPECIFICATION. TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
l Be it known that I, IsaAC A. PINNELL,'0` Galva, in the county of Henry, and State of Illinois, have invented .t `a new and improved Water fElevator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact3 l;
description thereof, referencebeing had totheaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Thenature of my invention consists in providing machinery to elevate water from 1 common wells in such a` manner that one or more buckets maybe -used at the same time. When two are used while one bucket is` 1 descending, the other is ascending to thetop of r the well. p
It more particularly consists in constructing a lever in combination with gear-wheels, that by means of the, said lever the wheels may be thrown in and out of gear, as may be desired, so that either of the buckets may` be elevated and lowered at will. t
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved water elevator. Figure 2 is a vertiealsectional elevation, from the line x zu.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional elevation, Afrom the line y.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and'use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction` and operation. t
Letters oflikc name and kind refer to like parts ineach of the figures. i A representsthe curb of awell of ordinary construction, which is placed around the top of a well. B is a` large wheel provided with ratchet teeth upon the periphery, in which a'pawl, C, works. Upon the inner side of the rim of the said wheel B are also ratchet teeth, vwhch are made to lit and mesh into corresponding teeth upon p t the pinion-wheels D D. The said pinions are secured to theshaft of the drums E E `upon4 the opposite end of which are gear-wheels F Fl, which mesh in corresponding teeth with each other.` The shafts of the drums have journals which run in suitable bearings, G, the said bearingsV being secured to the topoi` the curb-A. `H J is a cross-timber running transversely from side to `side of the curb A, and to which is secured one of the hangers t bearing one end of the shaft of the ratchet-wheel B. I ,is africtionyroller, overwhich the rope J passes to keep the bucket in its proper position as it is ascending and descending. This roller, Lis provided with journals that run in bearings K K, which are also secured to the top of the'curb. L L- are the buckets attached to the endsof ropes J and M, which ropes serve the purpose of elevating and lowering the buckets` liuto fand out of the well. N is a lever having its fulcrum at O, tig. 2, and being provided with an` arm, R, that lektends upward from the r fulcrum. At the upper end ot the said arm is a slot, (as seen in dotted lines iu fig. 2,) which is madetot in..
a. corresponding lug which projects from the bar P.` The bar P isi also providedvvith arms, Q Q, at each end, which extend upward and in the upper ends of which are also slots 'that fit to the bearing of `the shafts of the drums E E. At the end of the bar or lever N is a. guide bar or staplein which the end of the lever N works. The operation is simple and easy. When it is desired to lower the bucket L into the'well, the end of the lever N is raised, as shown in red lines, tig. 2, which movement disengages the pinion' D from the main wheel B,` then by the action of the gear-wheel F, upon the wheel F', thc bucket L is lowered, and the buoketL is raised.`
When it is desired to lower the bucket L, the lever N is brought-down to the positiomas `shown ing, 2, which. depression disengages the pinion D from thc'wheel B, and at the same time engages the pinionlD with the wheel B. When bythe action .of the gear-wheel F upon the wheel F the bucket upon the end of the rope M descends at the same time the Ybucket L ascends. p It will here be observed that inthe operation of raising and lowering the buckets L and L', and as the end of the lever N is raised, as seen in red lines, that the slotted bar R, which extends upward, is engaged with the lug upon the bar P. At thesame time the slottedprojections Q Q upon the ends of the bar P are engaged, respectively, withthe ends of the respectiveshafts of the drums E E, so that by moving the lever Fup and down the ratehet-pinions D D are engaged and disengaged, respectively-,with r the ratchet upon the inside of the rim of the wheel B, by which means the buckets are made to descend and ascend, as may be desired. It will also be observed that in the bottom of the bucketsare valves, A2 A2, which Op bucket by the weight 1of water therein the valve is at once closed bythe weight ofthe water in the bucket, and
the water is retained until the bucket reaches the top, when the hooks on the side of the bucket come in contact with a bail, BZ, running across the inside of the curb, and by still raising the bucketit is emptied into the spout' C2, which conducts the water into any proper receptacle A brake of anyordiuary form may be applied t0 pulle en as soon as the bottom of the bucket strikes the water, the bucket then becomes filled. By raising `the y D'Z upon the end of the shaft of the drum E. Thus it will be seen that by my device water 'may be drawn from wells easily and rapidly by adjusting the lever N, as desired, und turning the'wheel B by means of the crank O". The buckets muy be made to rest at any point in the Well by the pawl C, engaging in the ratchetwheel B.
Having thus deseribedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The ber I provided at the ends v'vith slotted arms that engage the shafts of the drums E E', for the purposes and substantially as described. v l
2. The bur l? provided with the slotted arms Q Q in combination with the lever N, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
3. In combination with the bar P und lever N, the drums EE', with the gear-wheels F F and the lattehet-` Wheels D D', for the purposes and substentially'es described.
4. The wheel B provided with :L ratchet upon its periphery, and one upon the inside of the rim in eornbina.-
nation with the drums E E', lever. N und bar P, substantially as herein set forth.
ISAAC A. PINNELL.
