ELBERT E. MUNGER, OF SPENCER, IOWVA.
BED.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,347, dated April 12, 1898.
Application filed May 24,1897. Serial No. 637,856. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern: r I I Be it known that I, ELBERT-EZ MUNGER, of Spencer, in the county of Clay and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Bed, of whichthe followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the inventionis to provide a new and improved bed arranged for conveniently adjusting the mattress-support to bring the mattress into any desired position.
The invention consists of certain parts and combinations, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims;
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all'thefigures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same with the mattress omitted. I Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is asimilar view'of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation of the catch for holding the seat-board in place.
The improved bed is provided with asuitable head A, a foot 13, and side rails O 0, all rigidly connected with each other to form'a rigid bedstead of the usual construction. A transverse pivot D rests with its ends in sockets 0 formed or secured on the inside of the rails O O, at or near the middle thereof, and on the said pivot D is hung the mattress-support E, provided at its upper and lower ends with upwardly-extending lugs E E supporting the ends of the spring F, carrying a mattress F.
On the upper or head end of the rails of the mattress-support E are hinged legs E pressed on by springs E to engage the legs with notches in vertical bars A, secured to the lower ends of the bedstead-posts of the head A. These legs are readily disengaged to permit of lowering the head end of the mattress-support, and consequently the head end of the mattress. They do not interfere with the raising of the head end.
When it is desired to depress the head end of the mattress below the horizontal line, the legs may be drawn backward to point their lower ends toward the foot end of the bed. When in this last-described position, the legs rest on the floor of the room. (See dotted-line position shown in Fig. 1.)
' When'the upper end ofthe support E is swung upward, then the legs, by the action of the springs E, are automatically thrown in engagement with the serrated bars A. By the mechanism described the mattress may be placed in any desired inclination or in a horizontal position. The head end may be elevated and the foot end depressed, or the foot end elevated and the head end depressed.
The springs E, that hold the legs E in the notches of the bars A, are fastened to the rails of the mattress-support j ust behind the legs and extend downward near the lower end of the legs E so as to throw or press the same into'the notches.
v The footends of theflrails of the mattresssupport E are furnished with straps G, of
leather or other flexible material, and fastened by buckles Gr or other suitable means to the foot B of the bedstead to hold the foot end of the mattress-support E, and consequently the foot endof the mattress F, from descending below any desired position.
The bed'is furnished with an adjustable transversely-extending seat-board H, placed under the mattress F near the middle trans- Verse line of the mattress, but nearest to foot end of the mattress. When the seat-board H is in position for use, it rests at the ends upon the bedstead-rails and above the bedspring F. The seat-board H is held from slipping toward the foot of the bed by pivoted catches or stops H, held in recesses formed in the top of the bedstead-rails C C. When the seat-board H is removed and not in use, these pivoted catches or stops H may be depressed below the surface of the bedsteadrails and so be out of the way when 'a person desires to get into or out of the bed.
The spring F is provided on either side of the pivot D at the most suitable points with spring-supports I I. These spring-supports I I are pivotally attached to the under side of one of the rails of the mattress-support E and are furnished with cords l at their free ends, so that they may be drawn up to the under side of the spring F and securely fastened to a button I or the like, held on the opposite rail of the mattress-support. Normally these spring-supports I I drop, so as to be entirely out of the Way and permit of the full use of the spring F. They do not at any time interfere with the pivotal action of the mattresssupport E.
The bed is provided with two adjustable limb-supports J J, pivotally attached to the seat-board 1-1. These limb-supports J J rest above the spring F and below the mattress F, and their outer ends are furnished with cords G by which they may be held in any desired position by attaching the cords to knobs G fastened to the foot 13 of the bedstead. The seat-board H and limb-supports J J may be inserted or removed at pleasure. The mattress F is divided longitudinally along the middle from the foot end about one-half the length of the mattress for the purpose of facilitating the use of a vessel and to permit of placing either limb in any desired position, either above or below the horizontal line.
The mattress has strong flaps F on the sides extending from near the pivot D to near the head end and other flaps F F on the head end and foot end of the mattress. These flaps F F F are provided with buttonholes for fastening to buttons E fixed to the side rails and cross-lugs E E of the mattress-support E.
The bed is provided with a pivotally-mounted mattress-support furnished with buttons corresponding in position with the buttonholes in the flaps just described.
By attaching the flaps F F F of the mattress F to the buttons E fixed in the rails and lugs of the mattress-support, the mattress may be crimped and folded, so as to form a comfortable cushion upon the seat-board before described and easy back and limb rests when the mattress-support is swung into an inclined position.
A brace K connects the side rails C O with each other at the middle thereof below the pivot D to prevent the said rails from spreading.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bed provided with a mattress-support pivoted at or near the middle, an adjustable seat under the mattress near the middle, two pivotally-attached limb-supports carried by the mattress-support and pivoted stops fixed in the top of the bedstead-rails, and serving to hold the seat.
