UNITED STATES PATENT FFECEQ SERIAH STEVENS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SURGICAL LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,'762, dated April 5, 1898. Ap lication filecl June 13,1897. Serial No. 641,271. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SERIAH STEVENS, of Boston, county of Sufifolk,State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Surgical Lounges, of which the following description,- in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and numerals on the drawings representing like parts.
Physicians have frequently to perform operations when the patient has to recline, and for this class of work instead' of using an operating-table I have devised a novel lounge which when an operation is to be made may be elevatedto the proper height and there maintained during the operation.
In my improved surgical lounge the upholstored top is supported on the frame below it by legs and braces, so that the top may be quickly raised to any desired height.
Figure 1 shows my improved surgical lounge elevated in working position. Fig. 2 shows it closed as a regular office-lounge. Fig. 3 is a View of the under side of the top overturned, showing the legs and braces lying against it as when the top part is lowered. Figs. 4 and 5 are details to be described. Fig. 6 is a crosssection through the top on dotted line oc, Fig. 3.
The frame of the lounge is represented as composed of four parts or legs A, connected by side and end pieces A', and the space between the side and end pieces will preferably have a bottom A to thereby leave a space in which may enter parts to' be described connected to the under side of the movable top part B to be described, the said top frame being upholstered and covered in any usual or suitable manner, as shown in Fig. 6. The frame B' of the top part B is also composed of suitable side and end pieces suitably united together, a suitable board, as b, being laid in between the side pieces to receive upon it the upholstering material. (See Fig. 6.`) Between the said side pieces B','I place' one or more pieces ofscantling, as 13 and to these pieces I attach by suitable screws 13 a guiding-cleat 13 the sides of the said cleat being provided with ribs b' 19 the'lowerrib being shorter than the upper one, so that'the brace e' may be laid straight with the guiding-cleat when the top part is lowered, as in Figs. 2 and 3.
The guiding-cleatacts to hold np and guide the slides O. C in their endwise movements, the said slides having, as shown grooves to receive the said ribs, the ribs and grooves being kept one on the other by blocks D,mounted adjustably on the scantlin g by screws d, said blocks being under the control of a clampingscrew d'., extended through metallic threaded nuts 61 attached to the blocks D and through the slots c in the slides O, so that by rotating said screw the slides C C may be so firmly clamped as to hold them positively in place, they being so locked when the top part is elevated,`as shown by full lines in Fig. 1, the screw being turned to unclamp 'the said slides when the top part isto be lowered. The slides' C C are each connected at one end by a hinge e to a brace e', in turn jointed by a hinge 6 to the lower end of a leg f, hinged at f' to a cross-harj The leg f is made wide and has, as shown, two holes 2, which as the leg is being swung from its horizontal into amore or less vertical position travels over a track g, fixed in the loungebase, saidvlegfinally meeting a shoulder 3 of the track, apin or projection 4 of the track entel-ing the hole 2 and preve'nting the leg from being lifted from the base. The leg also has a looking device h, it presenting a springpressed bolt, which as the leg is brought into the position Figs. ;i and 4 entersa notch in a plate h', located near the end of a track 7 The looking devices have cords n attached to them, which may be engaged when the looking device is to be disengaged to let the top'part down. The top part or iframe has two leg or foot rests m, which are adapted to be drawn out, as in Fig. 3, when the lounge usually, en'gage the foot end of the top part,
and to 'prevent the top part from sliding'longitudinally when the opposite end of the top part is raised I have attached tothe righthand leg f (see Fig.' l) by a suitable hinge p a link p', said link p' being hin ge-j ointed to the bottom A at '19 v.
IOO
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An operating-lounge composed of a base and a top, said top having hinged to it near its end holding-legs, braces hinged to the free ends of said legs, and slides hinged to the opposite ends of said braces, combined with longitudinally-arranged guides to receive said slides, and means to clamp and hold said slides in adjusted position, to thereby keep the top elevated above the base, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The top part provided with a longitudinally-arranged guiding-cleat, two slides cooperating with different sides of the said cleat, and blocks D located at the outer sides of said slides, braces attached to said slides, and 'legs hinged to the said top part and to the said braces, and a base-frame on which the lower ends of said legs rest, combined with means to move said blocks to clamp the said slides and hold them, substantially as described.
3. The top part provided with a longitudinally-arranged guiding-cleat, two slides cooperating with different sides of the said cleat, and blocks D located at the outer sides of said slides, braces attached to said slides and legs hinged to the said top part and to the said braces, and a base-frame having blocks on which said legs slide, and pins to engage and hold the said legs when in their elevated positions, combined With means to move said blocks to clamp the said slides and hold theni, substantially as described.
4. The top part provided with a longitudinal1y-arranged guiding-cleat, two slides cooperating with different sides of the said cleat, andblocks D located at the outer sides of said slides, braces attached to said slides, legs hinged to the said top part and to the said braces, and a base-frame having tracks on which said legs slide and pins to engage and hold the said legs when in their elevated positions, and looking devices for said legs, substantially as described.
5. An operating-lounge composed of a base, and a top, said top having connected to it legs and slides, and braces attached to said slides, combined with means to guide and clanp the said slides when it is desired to retain thetop part of the lounge elevated for an Operatinglounge, and a link conneeting said base and one of said legs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
SERIAII STEVENS.
