DRIGGS, of Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Sash-Holders anydliasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings, gures,

and letters of reference'thereon, making part of this specification. V

The drawing shows a front elevation of ai window'with my invention attached thereto.

The Object of my invention is to hold the window sash securely at any desiredhe'ght, and also securely lock the same when the window is closed; andconsists in lthe employment, in combination with a window sash, of a ratchet-bar and a spring pawl or catch, as will be fully explained hereafter. f

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the construct-ion and operation thereof. v f

A represents the windowsash, the edge of which is grooved to receive a metal ratchet-bar, O, which is secured to 'the window casing, B, the casing in the drawing being broken away to show the internal arrangement. The teeth on the ratchet-bar all point upwards except the lower one, Va, which points in the reverse direction. To the window sash I secure a springl pawl or dog, `b D, and a thumb-piece, E, as plainly shown.

The Operation will. :be as follows: To raise the window the thumb-piece, E, is pressed to the right, which withdraws thedog D from the ratchet-tooth, a, and the window raised to the desired height; Vthe dog D then catches on a ratchettooth and holds it securely. To lower the window the dog is withdrawn from the teeth, and when the window isvdown the dog passes under the inverted ratchet-tooth, a, and securely locks the window., i I am aware that metallic ratchetshave been combined with windows to support'the sash, an example of which may be seen in patent No.'12,833, butI am not aware of any instance in which apratchet has been used Vhaving teeth pointing up and down, whereby the window sash maybe supported in any desired position and locked, t

I claim, in combination with a window sash A, a. ratchet C, provided withteeth as described, and a spring dog or pawl D. provided with a thumb-piece E, the whole constructed and operating substantially as described and specizted. i l
