UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
JAMES A. BOWEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BAND, MCNALLY,
dz; COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
COPY-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,393, dated March 29, 1898.
Applicatio fil d November 12, 1897. Serial No. 658,289. a. mine.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,
in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Books, of which the following is a specification.
It is believed by many that the best practice for a person learning to write is to contemplate a copy and then attempt to reproduce it without seeing it while the reproduction is in progress. To facilitate this practice various devices have been used for concealing the copy in an ordinary copy-book after it has been contemplated, with a view to fixing it in the mind and during the attempt to reproduce it 5 but so far as I am aware it has never been proposed to provide the book itself with means for concealing the copy. To provide a book having such means is the object of the present invention.
In carrying out the invention I provide the book with a flap so disposed that after the copy has been contemplated for a sufficient length of time the flap may be folded over the copy so as to conceal it during the attempt to reproduce it, leaving the balance of the page exposed. Preferably this flap takes the form of an extension proceeding from the edge of one of the leaves of the book, and in order to avoid departing from the present style of copy-book, in which a copy is disposed at the top of each page, this flap preferably proceeds from the upper edge of the leaf of which it is an extension, so that when folded down it will conceal the copy, while leaving the balance of the page exposed for repeated re productions of it. So faras I am aware, however, I am the first to provide a copy-book with a strip or flap so disposed that it may be manipulated in the manner described, and I therefore desire to have it understood that in its broadest aspect the present invention is not limited to any particular disposition of said strip or flap so long as it is so disposed that it will meet the requirements above stated nor is it limited to the number of such strips or flaps, albeit I prefer to use two of them so disposed that one of them may be folded over the copy on the left-hand page and the other may be folded over the copy on the right-hand page, and for the further reason already stated these flaps preferably take the form of extensions proceeding from the upper edges of the permanent cover-leaves.
The invention consists in the features of novelty that are herein described, and in order that it may be more fully understood I will describe it with reference to the accompanying'drawings, which are made a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of'a copybook embodying the invention, with the flaps thereof so disposed that the copies on both exposed pages of the book are revealed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof with one vof the flaps so disposed that it conceals the copy on the left-hand page.
A represents the leaves of the copy-book, which may be of any desired number and either plain or ruled in any desired manner. Preferably each of the pages of the book is provided with a copy a, the nature of which will depend upon the attainments of the person by whom the book is intended for use. I
B are the permanent cover-leaves. Ordinarily these cover-leaves are made of paper, so that the book as a whole is flexible, and this is preferred in carrying out the present invention.
0 are strips or flaps which are so disposed that the copy on any page may be revealed or concealed at will. As before stated, these flaps preferably consist of extensions which proceed from the upper edges of the coverleaves and are integral therewith, each flap being marked off from the cover-leaf'by a crimp or crease or fold o. 1
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to-secure by Letters Patent: I
1. As a new article of manufacture, a copybook having a copy disposed along one of the edges of each page and having a strip-or flap so disposed that it may be placed over the copy for the purpose of concealing it leaving the balance of the page exposed, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a copybook having a copy disposed along one of its edges and having one of the leaves provided with an extension forming a flap whichmay be placed over the copy for the purpose of concealing it leaving the balance of the page exposed, substantially as set forth.
' edge of each page and having one of the leaves provided at its upper edge with an extension forming a flap which may befolded over the 3. As a new article of manufacture, a copybook having a copy disposed along the upper copy for the purpose of concealing it leaving the balance of the page exposed, substantially as set forth.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a copybook having acopy disposed along one of the edges of each page and having one of the leaves provided with an extension forming a strip or flap which is adapted to be folded over the copy for the purpose of concealing it leaving Y the balance of the page exposed, said strip or flap being marked off by a crease or fold, substantially as set forth.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a copy book having a copy disposed along one of the edges of each page and having one of the permanent cover-leaves provided with a strip or? flap adapted to be folded over the copy for concealing it leaving the balance of the page exposed, substantially as set forth.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a copybook having a copy disposed along the upper edge of each page and having one of the permanent cover-leaves provided at its upper edge with a strip or flap adapted to be folded over the copy for the purpose of concealing it leaving the balance of the page exposed, sub
stantially as set forth.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a copybook, having a copy disposed along the upper edgeof each page and having each of the permanent cover-leaves provided at its upper edge with an extension forming a flap adapted to be folded over the copy for the purpose of concealing it leaving the balance of the page.
exposed, substantially as set forth.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a copybook having a copy disposed along the upper edge of each page and having permanent flexible cover-leaves, each of which is provided at its upper edge with aneXtension marked off by a crease or fold and forming a flap which is adapted to be folded over the copy for concealing it leaving the balance of the pageexposed, substantially as set forth.
