Uwrrnn Starts PATENT trion@ JOHN E. WVALSH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PORTABLE CRN E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,'757, dated March 15, 1898.
Application filed June 19, 1897. Serial No. 641,&20. (No model.)
To all whom it may concrn:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. YVALSH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Cranes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in portable cranes; and the object of my invention is to provide an easy transportable and adjustable step or socket for the mast of a crane, which is capable of being slid from one hatch of a Vessel to the other, or along a dock, and of being adjusted in a desired position ready for work in a very short time. In the acconpanying drawings, Figure lis a transverse section through the upper portion of g a scow with my improved step attachd tliereto, taken on the line :Ja ar; in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 in an elevation of Fig. l with the front guide or jib removed. Fig. 3 is a plan View of a scow, showing the arrangement of the guides along the deck of a vessel. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the wedges enployed at each of the four corners of the ground-plate a when the crane has been lowered to the deck of a vessel.
In the transferring of freight from and to the hold of Vessels an easy removable and adjustable crane is of great importance to do the work with the required eXpedition and economy. For this purpose I have Constructed a socket A, consisting of the step a, having a ground-plate a' projecting at both sides of the step and guided at the sides by the guide-rails g, mounted, preferably,at one side of a Vessel, the groove or recess g' of the guides being higher than the thickness of the ground-plate a'.
Near the ends of the groundplate and close to the projecting sides of the stepare formed four posts a provided with slots & through each two of which the shafts b are passed and held in position laterally by the set-rings b'. To the ends of the shafts four rollers ?3 are Secured, and set-screws d, passing through the top of the posts and pressing on said shafts or upon shells placed upon the shafts, will permit the raising and lowering of the entire socket A, transferring the pressure of the weight of the derrick O alternately from the bottom of the rollers to the top of the guiderails g, as shown in the drawngs, or from the bottom of the plate ato the deck 77, of the vessel. In the latter position, the working position of the crane, the step is further stiifened by drving wedges e e, Fig. 3, at each corner over the plate a' and under the projection of the guides g, filling the open spaces left there by lowering the socket A in the recesses g'.
When the crane is to be shifted from one hatch to another, the wedges e e are drawn and the screws d are tightened, raising the step A, and with it the crane, from the deck of the Vessel and throwing the weight upon the rollers 19 and the guide-rails g, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and permitting the crane tobe shifted With ease by rollin g it along the guiderals. On arrval at the new position the screws d are slackened until the plate a is resting on the deck and the wedges in the corners are adjusted, when it is readily placed in action again. ai
If light cranes are employed, the wheels b and their oonnections can be dispensed with and the socket can be moved along greased rails.
- Having thus described my invention, I
claim- 1. In a portable crane, the combination with guide-rails g, of a socket A having a ground-plate a', slotted posts & shafts b, carrying rollers b and screws d, as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
2. In a portable crane, the conhination with guide-rails g, of a socket A, having a ground-plate a', slotted posts a shafts b, carrying rollers 6 screws CZ and wedges e, as and for the purposes herein shown and set f'orth.
Signed at New York, in the County of New York and State of New York, this 18th day of June, A. D. 1897.
