SUCKER-ROD ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,163, dated March 8, 1898.
Application led November 18, 1896. Serial No. 612,621. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H. MCLAUGH- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at McFann, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sucker-Rod Elevators; and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sucker-rod elevators for oil-wells.
My object is to provide a sucker-rod elevator of such improved construction that there will be no liability of its becoming loosened or detached from the rod and one which can `be applied to or removed from the rod quickly and easily.
Having this object in view, the invention consists of a sucker-rod elevator comprising certain novel features and combinations of parts appearing more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved elevator in use, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section taken through the clamping-disk.
The numeral 1 designates the body of the device, which comprises a main portion and arms 2 and 3.
The numeral 4 designates a swiveled link connected to the upper end of the body. This link is employed so that should the rope twist the swivel will turn and the remainder of the device remain stationary.
At 5 I have shown a clamping or clutch disk, which is pivoted to the arms 2 and 3 by trunnions G and 7 and lies between said arms.
The numeral 8 designates a lug or ange which projects from the disk and is adapted to arrest the downward movement of the body should it become detached from the rope.
The clamp or clutch disk is provided with a radially-extending slot 9, leading inward on an opposite side from the flange 8. The disk is provided with three slots lO, 11, and 12, and said disk is hollowed out to bring the slots 10 and 11 into communication. The slots 11 and 12 are also in communication. There is a locking-catch 13 which projects out into the slot 9, said catch having the incline 14. The numeral 15 designates the head of a pivotpin which is free to turn in the disk, and it has a squared portion 16, on which the catch is received.
At 17 I have shown a spring having a free end bearing against the catch and tending to urge the same outward into the slot 9. One end of said spring is fixed by two pins 18 and 19, said end passing between the pins and being bent around the pin 19.
The numeral 2O designates a lever which is pivoted within the disk on a pin 2l, said lever having one end pivotally connected to the locking-catch by a slot-and-stop connection 22. The other end of the lever works in the slots 11 and 12, and it has a thumb-piece 23, which moves in slot 11. By pressing this thumb-piece inwardly the locking-catch can be retracted. Said locking-catch can also be.
retracted by grasping the head 15, which constitutes a thumb-piece, and turning the same,
so that the catch can be operated from either side of the elevator.
The numeral 24 designates a sucker-rod pin which has the collar 25. The pin is received in the slot 9, meanwhile riding on the inclined portion of the locking-catch, and after said locking-catch has been passed it springs out and secures the pin in the slot, while the collar 25 prevents said pin' from falling out.
The advantages of my invention are, first, that the catch can be retracted from either side of the elevator, as most convenient to the operator; second, by reason of the spring bearing directly against the locking-catch and the connection between the catch and the lever there is no tendency for any jar or vibration to cause the catch to unlock the sucker-rod, and, third', all of the parts, with the single eX- ception of the thumb-piece 15, are incased by the disk, so that they are protected from in- Jury.
Should the swivel become unhooked from the rope'and drop, if it falls on the iiange Sits downward movement relatively to the sucker-rod will be arrested, and hence there will be no tendency for the body to exert a leverage and uncatch the elevator from the sucker-rod pin, and thereby completely detaching the device and rendering the same safe. Should it fall on the opposite side, it
will only serve to wedge the pin in position. With my device accidents such as frequently happen with the use of sucker-rod elevators will be satisfactorily obviated.
Another advantage of the present invention is that, inasmuch as the elevator is secured firmly to the sucker-rod, should the said elevator become unhooked from the cable it will, after dropping, engage with the platform or iioor of the derrick and prevent the suckerrod from dropping to the bottom of the Well, which would occasion, should it happen, the expenditure'of much time, labor, and a good deal of expense.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new isl. In a sucker-rod elevator, the combination with abody, of amember pivoted thereto and having a slot adapted to receive the suckerrod, a pivoted catch, a spring bearing directly against said catch and which normally pro jects the same into the slot, and a lever which is pivoted to the member and also pivotally connected to the catch by a slot-and-stop connection.
2. In a sucker-rod elevator, the combination with a body, of a member connected thereto and provided with a slot adapted to receive the sucker-rod, a locking-catch, a pivot-pin having a squared portion passed through the catch and which is free to turn in the member, said pin having a thumb-piece, a spring urging said locking-catch, and a lever pivoted to the member and connected to the lockingcatch by a slot-and-stop connection.
