NITED STATES union.
PATENT TONY O. GAT'II, OF MOSS POINT, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN W. STEWART, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED BOLT-PULLER AND JACK-SCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,752, dated May 19, 1891.
Application filed August 1d, 1890. Serial No. 361,914, (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TONY CEAsAR GATTI, a citizen of Ancona, Italy, residing at Moss Point, in the county of Jackson and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bolt- Puller and Jack-Screw; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in lifting-jacks; and it consists in a construction and combination of parts thoroughly adapted to perform the function of a liftingjack, and a new and improved ,inechanism adapted to operate in conjunction with said jack for extracting bolts and spikes from thin her, as is desirable more particularly in such work as bridge building and repairing.
The novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of my improved jack, the lower portion of the stand thereof being broken away to illustrate the bolt-extracting mechanism, which in this instance is illustrated as extending below the base of the stand in a position to grasp a bolt or spike head below the base on which the stand rests. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the extracting mechanism in a position to extract a bolt or spike on the same horizontal plane as the base of the stand. Fig. 3 is a view at right angles to Figs. 1 and 2 with the extracting mechanism ext-ended. Fig. 4 is a detail diametrical sectional view illustrating the manner of connection between the stand and the interiorly-threaded collar thereon.
In the practice of my invention I may employ any material in the construction of the several elements thereof that is best suited for the functions to be performed, and in said construction I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction illustrated and to be described, as it is obvious that such modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
In the said drawings, the stand indicated by A may in general configuration be of the form usually employed, and it is provided, as better illustrated inFig. 3, at diametricallyopposite points with upwardly-converging openings, which extend from the base-plate a of said stand to a pointadjacent to its top, and are designed to allow of a free lateral extension of the toggle extracting-levers presently to be described. This stand A is provided at its top, as better illustrated in Fig. 4, with a collar-flange b, which takes into a recess formed in the inside of a collar I3, which is of the ordinary construction and turns loosely on the stand, and is provided with recesses in its periphery to receive the end of a turning lever and with a central threaded bore 0 to receive the screw-rod O. The screwrod O, which is of a suitable length and diameter, is provided with any ordinary or approved thread-carrier at its top, and the ordinary bearing-cap D, which is milled or roughened on its bearingsurface, may be either swiveled or fixed upon the end of the screw-rod. The lower end of the screw-rod is flattened or beat down, as illustrated, and is provided with an eye to receive a pivot pin or rivet, which connects the inner ends of the toggle-levers-E to said screw. The outer ends of these toggle-levers E are pivotally connected by rivets or bolts to the inner ends of the grab-levers F, which are operated by the screw-rod O through the medium of the said toggle-levers. These grab-levers F have their lower ends turned in opposite directions, as illustrated at e, to facilitate their engagement with abolt-head, and one of said levers F is recessed at an intermediate point in its length on one of its sides at f to afford a seat for the other lever, which is pivotally connected thereto by a pivotbolt or rivet, as illustrated.
In operation, when the several parts have been placed in the respective positions shown, with the grab-levers in a proper position to engage the bolt or spike head, the ordinary turning lever is inserted in the recesses of the collar B and the said collar is turned down upon the screw-rod O. This movement, with the stand resting upon a base, will cause the said screw-rod O to move up without rotation,
IOO
and in turn will draw the toggle-lovers up and cause the grabbing and drawing lovers to grasp and draw the spike when the screwrod has been carried up the requisite distance.
Having described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with the cylindrical stand having its shell longitudinally slotted at diametrically-opposite points and provided at its top with a collar-flange Z), the collar B, provided with an inwardly-directed annular flange adapted to take into the recess formed by the flange Z) and to turn upon said flange, said collar being provided with recesses in its periphery and a central Vertical screwthreaded aperture to receive the screw-rod C, the said screw-rod flattened at its lower end and provided with an eye in said flattened portion, and the bearing-eap l), swiveled on the upper end of said serew-rod,of the Log gle-levers having their inner ends pivotally connected to the flattened portion of said screw-rod and their outer ends pivotally connected to the ends of the grab or drawing 1evers and the said grab or drawing levers pivotally connected together at an intermediate point in their length and provided at their ends with claws adapted to grasp a bolt-head, all adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
