SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,543, dated February 22, 1898. Application filed June 19, 1897. Serial No. 641,469. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN WHITAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Incandescent Electric Lights, of which the following is a full and complete specication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to supports for incandescent electric lights; and the object thereof is to provide an improved flexible device of this class which is adapted to serve as a support for such lights in any position and which is particularly adapted for use in connection with what is known as an incandescent stand lamp or light.7
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown my invention applied to an incandescent stand lamp or light, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a side View of my improved incandescent stand-lamp5 Fig. 2, a section of a part thereof; and Fig. 3, a view similar to a part of Fig. 1, showing a modification.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawings, I provide a base 5, which is preferably provided with an upwardlydirected extension 6, and I also provide an ordinary incandescent electric -light bulb 7, which is provided with the usual head 8,which is provided with a tubular screw-threaded neck 9, in which is secured a detachable screwthreaded tube 10, and my improved standard, holder, or support consists of a spring-coil11, which is preferably composed of closely wound or coiled wire of steel or similar material and on which is mounted a plurality of separate sections 12. The opposite ends of the spring-coil 11 are rigidly secured in the base 6 and the tube 10, and the detachable sections l2 of the standard, holder, or support are preferably concavo-conveX in form and mounted on the spring-coil 11, preferably in the position shown in the drawings, in
which the convex surfaces thereof are die rected upwardly.
The separate sections 12 of the standard, holder, or support are held in close connection by the spring-coil 11, and it will be understood that said standard, holder, or support may be turned or twisted into any de` sired form, so as to hold theincandescent electric-light bulb in any desired position by simply turning said holder, standard, or support into the form or position desired, the friction between the separate sections 12 being such as to hold the incandescent electric-light bulb in an upwardly, laterally, or downwardly directed position, as will be readilyunderstood.
My invention is not limited to the exact form of the separate sections 12 of the standard, holder, or support herein described, the only object in this connection being to provide separate sections for this purpose which are adapted to move one upon another, as hereinbefore described, and which are held together by friction.
The conductor-wires 18 and la are also preferably passed through the standard, holder, or support, as shown in Fig. 2; but this arrangement of said conductor-wires, although the one preferred, is not essential, as the same may be connected with the head of an electric-light bulb in any desired manner.
It will also be apparent that the base 5 is not absolutely essential, as any other device suitable for this purpose may be employed, and the holder or support may be suspended from a ceiling' or connected with a wall, and other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Any suitable means may be provided for increasing the friction between the separate sections 12 of the standard, holder, or support, and for this purpose a screw-threaded collar maybe mounted on the tube 10, .and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive.
The spring-coil11 is not an absolutely essential feature of my improvement, and in Fig.

3 I have shown a modified form of construen tion in which the separate sections 12 consist of the balls or spherical bodies 13 and 14, one of which is sin aller than the other and which are connected in line, and the larger ball or body is cut away at one side, asshown at 15, and is provided with a spherical cavity or recess 16, into which the smaller ball or body is adapted to be inserted, and the larger balls or bodies 13 are composed of elastic material, and when the smaller balls or bodies 14 are inserted thereinto they are held therein by friction, this form of connection being what is known as an ordinary ball-and-socket joint. The balls or bodies 13 and 14 of which the separate sections 12 are composed are preferably in this form of construction formed integrally, and it will be apparent that any desired number of these sections may be connected, so as to make the standard, holder, or support as long as necessary.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A standard or support for incandescent electric lights, consisting of a base, a springccil secured thereto, an incandescent electric light provided with a tube which is detachably connected therewith by means of a screw-thread, and with which said spring-coil is connected, and a plurality of separate frictional sections mounted on said coil, substantially as shown and described.
2. A standard or support for incandescent electric lights, consisting of a base, a springcoil secured thereto, an incandescent electric light provided with a tube which is detachably connected therewith by means of a screw-thread, and with which said springcoil is connected, and'a plurality of separate frictional sections mounted on said coil, and conductor-wires which are passed through said base, and said spring-coil, substantially as shown and described.
3. A standard, holder or support for incandescent lights, comprising a base provided with a semispherical socket on the upper side thereof, a plurality of separate detachable sections each of which consists of a large and small spherical portion, the large spherical portion being provided with a semispherical socket, said sections being adapted to be held together by friction, and means to secure an incandescent light to the upper end thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
