IIOVVARD L. ELTON AND NORMAN J. ShIIITI'I, OF PHILADELPHIA,
PENNSYLVANIA.
SHiELD FOR BEQYQLE LAMP BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,525, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed August 20, 1896. Serial No. 603,300. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern):
Be it known that we, HOWARD L. ELTON and NORMAN J. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields for Bicycle-Lamp Burn ers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in shields for bicycle and other lamp burners, and has for its object to provide a gauze shield of such shape and design and so arranged relative to the burner of the lamp as to break the force of direct drafts upon the flame supported upon the burner and yet at the same time not to interfere with the proper access of air to the flame for the support of combustion, thereby preventing the extinguishing of said flame by sudden drafts from various directions and at the same time concentrating the illuminating power of the flame by confining it within a given space, so that more perfect combustion will be had and a greater illumination had in the desired direction.
\Vith these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, its construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in
which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of a bicycle-lamp having one form of our improvement attached to the burner thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of our improved shield.
Referring to the drawings, the shield shown therein consists of a rectangular frame J, of wire-gauze, having a bottom A, with protecting-strips 13 extending up at the ends, and a top strip (3, connecting the upper end of the protecting-strips. In the bottom A is an elongated slot for the passage of a flat wick-tube in order that the shield may be held in proper relative position to the burner. The frame entirely surrounds the flame on the top and side edges and the bottom, thus limiting the spread of said flame upon the well-known principle that a flame cannot be supported upon both sides of the wire-gauze. This is very advantageous in that it limits the spread of the flame, thereby concentrating the illuminating power and permitting the free projection of the light emanating therefrom both rearward against the reflector and forward through the lens of the lamp, yet completely shielding the flame from direct draft, either below, sidewise, or above.
In practice it has been found that when a burner is provided with a shield the flame will remain steady regardless of the varying drafts within the lamp-casing and will not become extinguished by the vibrations of the vehicle incident to travel over rough roadbeds.
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new and useful is- In combination with a flat wick-tube, a shield formed of a strip of wire-gauze having an elongated slot formed lengthwise therein for the passage of the wicktube, protectingstrips extending up at the ends of said strip, and a top strip of gauze connecting the up per ends of said protecting-strips, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto affiXed our signatures in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I-IO'WARD L. ELTON. NORMAN J. SMITH.
