JOE BARRON, OF YCLARKSON, MISSISSIPPI.
QUlLTlNG-FRAIVIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,092, dated February 15, 1898.
Application tiled May 13, 1897. Serial No. 636,327. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, .I OE BARRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarkson, in the county of Webs-ter andState of Missis` sippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilting-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of portable folding quiltingframes; and the obj ect is to provide a simple, inexpensive, light, and convenient device of this class. Y
To these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the saine reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figurel is a perspective View of my improved folding quilting-frame. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line of the pawls and ratchet-wheels, and Fig. 4 is a top plan View.
1 and 2 represent the side frames, which are of the exact size and shape of each other.
3 represents the quilt-roller, provided with the usual web, of any suitable material, to which the ends of the fabrics 4 and 5, forming the top and bottom of the quilt, are attached. The outer ends of this roller are provided with the ratchetwheels 6 6 and the projecting spindles 7 7, which extend through the bearings 8 in the top rails 9 9 of the side'frames.
10 10 represent washers secured on the projecting ends of the spindles by pins 11 11 and which assist in holding the side frames in a horizontal position, and 12 12 represent the usual gravity-pawls pivoted to the top rails and arranged to engage the ratchet-wheels 6 6.
13 represents the bottom-fabric roller, similar in construction to the quilt-roller, being provided with the ratchet-wheels 14 14, the pawls 14 14', and the spindles 15 15, extending through. suitable bearings in the opposite ends of the top railand having their projecting ends provided with the detachable washers 16 16, secured in place on said spindles on the outside of the rails.
17 17 represent horizontal arms projecting l with'the ratchet-wheels 22 22, and 23 23 represent parallel disks secured on the outer ends of said spindles and which, in connection with the washers 10 and 16, retain the frame in position for all practical'purposes.
24 24 represent pawls pivoted to the inside faces of the arms 17, and theirA toothed ends engage the ratchet-wheels in the usual manner. These pawls are each provided with an integral depending arm 25, formed with a curved slot 26, which corresponds to the arc of a circle having the fulcrum-point of the pawl for a radius, and the slot receives the spindle and secures it in the horizontal slot 18 in the arm 17 so that no matter what strain is put upon the roller 21 the spindles. are securely journaled in the arms. When it is necessary to replenish said roller 2l, it is only necessary to raise the pawl 24 untilits arm 25 is clear of the spindle 20,which may then be moved a short distance forward, and thence raised throughthe inclined slot 19 to release' it from lthe frame.
26 26 represent recesses in the forward ends of the top rails 9 9, which'form supports for the roller 21 when the operator is engaged in placing the'iilling on the bottom fabric preparatory to covering it with the top fabric, which is wound on the roller 2l.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same,as such changes or modications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully'7 described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In portable folding quilting-frames, the
IOO
combination of the side frames 1 and 2 provided with the horizontal top rails 9 9, the quilt-roller 3 provided with the spindes 7 7 jonrnaled in said rails, the ratchet-Wheels 6 6, the Washers 10 10 secured to the outer ends thereof and the pawls 12 engaging said ratchet Wheels, the roller 13 having the ratchet-Wheels 14C and pawls 1-1' engaging therewith, the horizontal arms 17 17 provided 1o with the horizontal slots 18 18 andthe inclined communicating slots 19 19, and the roller 21 provided with the spindles 2O 20, and the ratchet-Wheels 22 and disks 23, and the pawls 24 pivoted to the frame and formed with the integral depending arms 25, having a curved I5 y JOE BARRON.
