FENCE.

. Inventor.
Attorney.
WILLIAM DUNCAN, OF NORRISVILLE, MARYLAND.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,625, dated February 8, 1898.
Application filed August 2 1 397- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norrisville, in the county of Harford and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fences, and particularly to a fence-post adapted for use in the construction of wire or panel fences or combined wire and panel fences.
The object of the invention is to provide a fence-post of new and novel construction and a post-base out from a single piece of stone or iron in an original andpeculiar form in order to preserve and lengthen the life of the posts.
A further object of the invention is to provide special means for securing the post to the base, so that the post and base may be fixed together and yet be capable of separation shouldthe post become disabled.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of aportion of a wire fence. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of a post and base secured together. Fig.4is a vertical section through one of the post-slots.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several figures of from the bottom of the post into the body thereof to receive the vertical stem 3 of an inverted-T-shaped base 8, the short stem or head of the T being partially embedded in the Serial No. 649,419 (No model.)
in place by screw-hooks 12, provided with suitable nuts. The post-base is preferably made of one piece of stone, but iron may be used.
It is-obvious that the construction and arrangement of the post and base gives great strength and durability and that a fence composed wholly of wire or wood or of wire and wood maybe constructed upon the same posts;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. In a fence, the combination with the panels, the wire, the bolts for securing the panels, and the screw-hooks for securing the wire, of the posts having a central bottom outout and vertical slots through which the said bolts and hooks extenchthe inverted-T-shaped base having a portion secured in said outout, and the transverse bolts for securing the post and base together, as set forth.
2. The combination with a fence-post having a central bottom cut-out extending into the body of the post and a vertical slot upon each side of the cut-out, of an inverted-T- shaped base,'the long stem of the base fitting the said cut-out and the short stem'forming a seat for the said post, and the transverse bolts for securing said parts together, as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM DUNCAN.
