IMPROVEMENT IN SETTEES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,253, dated December 12, 1876; application filed August 24,1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HILAND A. MOORE, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Seat; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
Myinvent-ion relates to a novel construction for long portable seats or settees, such as are intended to accommodate a number of persons, and are used for public halls or places of assembly, and having their seats constructed of horizontal slats; and it consists in fastening the horizontal slats together at given distances by means of flexible bands, which produce an undulatory movement of the slats when a weight is placed upon them.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the settee, and Fig. 2 is an end view; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of a portion of the seat, showing the flexible strip.
My settee is composed of end pieces A A, which are sawed out of one and onc-halfinch plank, and one or more middle sections, B, of the same shape, these sections being united by narrow longitudinal strips to form the seat, and suitable back and strengthening strips. The form in which the end and middle sections Aand B is made will be best shown by referring to Fig. 2, in which X and Yare dotted lines passing, respectively, through the highest and lowest points of the seat at T and S,
and Z is a vertical line dropped from the highest point of the back to the floor.
The seat is formed by securing narrow strips of wood C, by nails or screws, so that they extend from end to end of the settee; and it will be manifest that when they are all secured in place the form of the whole seat will be that which has been described as the outline of the ends. The strips C are securely fastened together by flexible metal bands 0 e, for the purpose of giving an undulatory motion to the strips when a weight is placed upon them. The back is also curved so as to be comfortable, and is in like manner formed of longitudinal strips D, the seat and back being flexible as well as properly formed.
E is a strip secured to the front 'of the seat, for the purpose of stiffening the frame, and G are the arm'rests. These rests may be made in any suitable shape, and are preferably formed of half-round iron, which can be secured to the seat-frame by screwing or otherwise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lawn-seat, the slats C C, provided with supports A A B, in combination with intermediate flexible bands 0 0, connecting slats C, as set forth.
