H. L. OGDEN. 'Car Coupling.

IMPROVED GAR COUPLING.
. 1 SPECIFICATION- TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, H. L. OGDEN, of Atkinson, in the county of Henry, and State of Illinois, have invented a. new and improved Oar Coupling, and I do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is aside sectional view of my invention, taken in the line a: x, fig.'2.
Figure 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved car coupling of that class which are commonly termed selfv acting or self-coupling, and it consists of a circular link attached to an arbor which passes through the draw head, and a vertically sliding rod having a pin passing through it and a chain or cord attached which passes around the arbor, the lower end of the rod being curved and bent upward and passing through the rear partof a sliding bar in the draw head, and all arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the draw heads of two adjoining cars will couple or connect themselves as they come in contact, and also be capable of being disconnected or uncoupled by a very simple manipulation, and without the necessi ty-of a person passing between the cars.
A A represents two draw heads, each of which has a vertical slot or opening, a, in it extending entirely through from top to bottom, as shown clearly in fig. 1.
Bis an arbor, or shaft, which passes transversely through each -draw head. These arbors, or shafts, are allowed to turn freely in the draw heads, and each has a ring, 0, attached, said rings projecting forward of the draw heads so as to catch over ledges or hook projections b, the ring of one draw head catching over the projection of the other.-
Each draw head has a vertically sliding rod, 1), fitted in it. These rods are allowed to work freely in guides c c, and the lower end e of the rods, D, are bent and curved upward and pass loosely through the rear ends of horiz ontal sliding bars E, which are fittedin the draw heads.
The rods D D have chains or cords, 01, attached to them, which cords or chains pass around the arbors or hafts,B,"in the drawheads, as shown clearly in fig. 1, and said rods have each a pin, e, attached, said pins projecting from the rods, D, at right angles. By drawing upward the r0ds', D, it will be seen that the chains or cords, d, will rotate the arbcrs or shafts, 1%, and raise the rings, C, and these rings will be retained in an elevated state by turning the rods, D, so that their pins, e, will catch over the sides of the slots or openings, a. This turning of the rods, D, throws the bars, E, forward so that their front ends will project a trifle in-front of the draw heads, as shown in'both figures.
In order to eflect a coupling of the two draw heads but one ring, 0, should be raised, it is immaterial of which draw head, and as the two draw heads come in contact the sliding bar, E, of the draw head having the elevated ring is forced inward, and the rod, D, of said draw head turned so that its pin, 9, will be moved off from the edge of the slot or opening, a, and the elevated ring will drop and catch over the ledge or hook projection, 71, of the other draw head.
The device is extremely simple and eflicient; may be constructed at a small cost, and there are no parts liable to get out of repair or become deranged by use.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The rings 0, attached to the shafts or arbors B, in combination. with the rods D, provided with the pins" e, and the chains or cords d, which pass around the shafts or arbors B, and the sliding bars E, all arranged and applied to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
H. L. OGDEN.
