PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 598,032, dated January 25, 1898.
Application filed June 1, 1897. Serial No. 639,017. o model-J T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS C. STETTLER, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a knockdown or collapsible paper box the bottom of which is held in place by locking devices formed thereon and engaging with the side flaps.
Other features of my invention are more fully setforth in thedescription of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the-box. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the two blanks atdivided into two parts and with the sides B andD laid out fiat. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank forming the bottom and side 0 of the box, and Fig. 4. is a similar view of the The box is formed from two blanks respectively illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. The blank tom E, adapted to be folded at a right angle on the line 0. The side 0 is provided with flaps e 6, adapted to be pasted to the ends of the flaps B D, and the bottom E is provided with an upwardly-folding flap extension 0., which has the two end extensions 1) b, which fold inwardly against the flap a when forming the box and extending at right angles thereto and against the sides D B when the box is formed. The blank shown in Fig. 4
comprises the sides A, B, and D, adapted to be folded on the dotted lines, as shown, and the ends of the sides B and D are adapted to be pasted or otherwise suitably attached to the flap extensions 6 e of the side 0. The
sides D B are provided at the bottom with the upwardly and inwardly folding flap extensions cl (Z, which are adapted to be folded at right angles to the sides, as shown by the dotted lines. The two blanks are secured togetherby pas-ting the ends of the sides D and B to the flaps e e of the side C, as shown in Fig. 2, thus forming a square tube. To secure the bottom in position, the side flaps d (Z are folded in, the flaps b b are folded down on the extension at, the extension at is folded on the line F, and the bottom is folded in, the flap a passing between the sides 13 D, so that the line F of the bottom just makes connection with the bottom of side A. The flap a is then folded against the side A, the flaps (Z d are fold ed down upon the bottom, and then the locking-flaps b b are folded out, passing over the flaps d d, resting on the bottom, and fitting up against the sides.D B, respectively, the underedges of said flaps Z) 1) bearing down upon flaps (Z (Z, which rest on the bottom, thus serving to securely lock the bottom to the sides D B in position for use. It will be observed that the flaps dd form the base for the locking-flaps b b and also strengthen and support the bottom and sides. They may, if desired, be extended across the bottom till they meet, thus forming a double bottom.-
The bottom. is folded out by reversing the operation described.
Having described my invention, I claim In a paper box, the sides provided with the flaps d, d, and the bottom provided with an extension flap a, the said extension flap carrying locking-hooks b, h, the edges of which engage and look the flaps cl, d, to the bottom, substantially as specified.
Intestiinony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANCIS O. STETTLER.
