Description

N. PETERS. PMDTWLITHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON, D C.

IMPROVEMENT. INl REELS.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. MeLEAN, of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer, in the State of New York, have invented a new Vand improved Worsted and Silk Reel; and I hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon:
Figure lis a side view of the reel complete as it is arranged for use, showing the arms in three positionsone for full-length yarn, onefor short or half length, and the other as folded up to'be laid away.
A is the clamp for fastening it to table, stand, or window-stool, or any other convenient place.
B is the thumb-screw for fastening clamp.
C is the spindle that revolves in the socket of clamp, holds the arms, adjusting screw, and washer.
D is the adjusting washer.
E is the adjusting thumb-nut.
F isthe arms made of iron wire and fastened to the spindle, as shown in iig. I and No. 6 of detail drawings.
Detail Drawings.
No. 2 is a side view of clamp. No. 3 is back view of same. No. 4 is two views of thumb-screw. No. 5, side View 0f spindle. No. 6, top view of same, with sections of arms, showing the mode of fastening them into the ears on spindle. No. 7, top view of washer for adjusting the arms to the diiferent kinds of workrequired. No. 8, side or edge view of same. No. 9, side view of thumb-nut for holding washer in position. No.. 10, top View of same.
The slots Gr G G G in the adjusting Washer are for the purpose of admitting the arms, when folded, close together. When in use the Washeris turned so as to prevent the arms from entering the slots.
When the skein is placed on the arms of the reel, unless there be some device to hold said arms out against the skein, the drawing of the thread or yarn from it would tend to raise up the arms and thus loosen the skeir on them. To prevent this I use the washer D and thumb-nut E as follows: When the skein is placed on th arms the washer D, as before stated, is turned on the spindle so that its slots shall not be opposite to the arms but so that its extreme perimeter shall bear against the arms. The nut E is then run downagainst the washer and the arms are forcibly extended and held against the skein. l
Having thus described my reel in all its parts, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letter Patent, isv In combination with the hinged or pivoted arms of the reel, the washer or nut for spreading and forcibl; holding said arms to the skein and against any tendency to rise on their pivots or hinges, substantially a described.
DANIEL H. McLEAN.
