p UNITED STATES JAMES E. DAVISON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
GRAPPLING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,668, dated January 18, 1898.
Application filed April 16, 18 9'7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. DAVISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grappling Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grappling devices for domestic use in lifting kettles, &c., the object of the same being to provide a device of this character in which the grappling-arms cannot he accidentally opened.
To this end the invention consists in pivoting the grappling-arms to a plate and shaping their inner ends to connect with lateral extensions of a shank in sliding engagement with the base-plate,the said shank being acted upon by a spring to close the grappling-arms.
In the following specification I have entered into a detail description of the parts which constitute my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals thereon which designate the different parts, and what I consider to be the novel features of construction are specifically recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an ele vation of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional View. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the grappling-arms.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the plate to which the grapplingarms 2 2 are pivoted. This plate is extended at each side to form the parts through which the pivot-pins 3 pass and is extended upward centrally to form a bearing for a sliding rod 4, that is held in engagement with the plate by loops 5 5. The lower end of this rod 4 is provided with lateral extensions 6 6, which enter the bifurcated ends of the grapplingarms to be embraced by the members 7 7. The outer ends of the grappling-arms are Serial No. 632,505, (No model.)
curved inward in the usual manner, and when the sliding rode is in its normal position the grappling-arms are operated so that the said lower ends will be brought together. The upper end of the sliding rod 4 is formed into a head 8, and between the upper end of the plate 1 and this head is interposed a helical spring or springs 9, which act to move the sliding rod to its normal position, that of closing the grappling-arms. The grapple is operated to open the arms by depressing the sliding rod against the action of the springs.
From the 'foregoin g description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be'seen that I provide a construction and arrangement which forms a simple device for preventing the grappling-arms from being accidentally opened, as the tension of the spring is exerted to close said arms.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a grappling device for the purpose set forth, the combination of a plate or support, grappling-arms pivoted thereto and provided with bifurcated inner ends, and a rod in sliding engagement with the plate or support, said rod having lateral extensions which engage the bifurcated ends of the grapplingarms, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a grappling device, the combination with the plate, of the grappling-arms pivoted thereto and provided with bifurcated inner ends, a rod in sliding engagement with the plate and having lateral extensions which engage the bifurcated ends of the grapplingarms, and a spring for actuating the sliding rod to normally close the grapplingarms, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES E. DAVISON.
