UNITED STATES PATENT oEEioE.
ALFRED AUSTIN WHITLEY, OF WHITEFIELD, BURY, ENGLAND.
CLIP FOR STENTERING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED AUsTIN I/VI-IIT- LEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, of East View, Higher Lane, Whitefield, Bury, in the county of Lancaster, England, engineer, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clips for Stentering- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips for stentering machines used for stretching and finish ing fabrics, which clips are provided with a gage tongue, or finger, which descends through an opening in the lower jaw, or plate, when the fabric moves from beneath the said gage-tongue, or finger, and releases the upper jaw of the clip which is then acted upon by spring pressure to grip the fabric between itself and the lower jaw, or plate, and the principal object of my invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction of such clips and render them more efficient and durable than hitherto.
According to my invention I mount the upper jaw upon a center pin carried by the arms of the clip and I extend the upper jaw above the said said center pin and provide the extension with a lifting piece which is acted upon by the opening lever to open the said upper jaw which is closed by spring pressure applied directly thereto so that I obtain in a simpler way than hitherto a secure and efficient spring-pressure clip without objectionable pressure of the gage-tongue, or finger, on the fabric.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 2 and 3 are respectively a vertical section with the upper jaw in the open position, a similar view with the upper jaw in the gripping position and a front elevation of a construction in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation and Fig. 5 a front elevation of a modification.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the upper jaw A is hinged at a to the armsof the clip and is provided with an extension above said center pin provided with a projection b to be acted upon by the roller 0 on the opening lever C, the said extension also having a bent-over head piece d embracing a rod 6 Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 19, 1907.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Serial No. 389,130.
with a foot-piece resting on the hinge pin 0 of the opening lever C, the said piece (1 being acted upon by one end of the Spring to hold the upper jawA in its closed position, the other end of the said spring)" bearing on the foot-piece e and keeping it firmly against the hinge pin 0 so that when the upper jaw is released, the said spring bears against the bent-over head piece d and causes the jaw to grip the fabric with a wedging action.
In the modification Figs. 4 and 5, one end of the spring f is directly connected to the upper jaw A while the other end of the said spring f is connected to the hinge pin 0 on which the opening lever C turns.
In each modification the spring acts directly upon the upper jaw in the one case by expansion against the bent-over head piece above the center a and in the other case by contraction below the center c.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. A stentering machine clip having an upper jaw centered to the clip arms and provided with a lifting piece above the center on which the upper jaw turns and with a bentover head piece embracing a rod with a footpiece resting on the hinge pin of the opening lever and a spring encircling the said rod and bearing at one end on the bent-over head piece of the upper aw and at the other end on the said foot piece, as described.
2. A stentering machine clip having an upper aw centered to the clip arms and provided with a lifting piece above the center on which the upper jaw turns, and a spring connected at one end directly to the said upper jaw, below the center on which it turns, and at the other end to the pin on which the opening lever turns, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED AUSTIN WHITLEY.
