is turned the head of the pin or screw eXt-ends transversely to said slot, thus holding the cap in position, said cap having depressed central and rim portions and a raised concentric portion between said rim and central depressed portions, the head of the screw or pin lying in the central depressed portion and substantially below the plane of the raised concentric portion, so that the cap presses firmly against the carpet o r rng both at the central and rim portions, the rim portion being elastio, so as to yield, but exert a spring-pressiue as the carpet or rng is deflected from the tread of the stairs to the nose of vthe tread above the same, thns keeping the carpet or rng stretched in the portion adjacent to the. fastener.

Referring to the drawings, A designates 'a cap, in the center of which is the slot B, the same being preferably of quadrilateral form.

O designates a screw having a head D,which is fiattened or qnadrilateral in form, so as to be capable of entering the slot B of the cap A, said head joining the shank of the screw and having a neck E, with slots F at the side thereof. The back of the central and rim portion of the cap are fiat and substantially in the same plane, so that both of said portions press the carpet firmly against the contiguons portion of the riser or fioor and prevent any looseness of the carpet between the periphery and rim, and vice versa.

It Will be noticed that the Cap has depressed central and rim portions and a raised concentric portion between said central and rim portions, the head of the screw or pin lying in the central depressed portion and substantially below the plane of said raised concentrio portion. tightly against the carpet or rng at both the center and rim portions, While the rim portion is elastic and imparts a spring-pressure and yields where the carpet or rng is inclined or oblique as it extends from the tread to the nosing.

The operation is as follows: An opening is formed inthe carpet, rng, dac., and the same passed back over the head of the screw. The cap is now1 presented to the screw, the slot B registering With the head thereof. The cap is then rotated a quarter-turn, Whereby the' Walls of the slot B enter the slots F of the neck E, it being noticed that the under side of the head D overhangs the walls of the slot B, the head standing at a right angle to said slot, thns controlling the cap, which, being pressed firinly against the carpetJ reliably fastens the same, owing to the flat back of the central and rim portions thereof. It is evident that byiinparting a quarter-tnrn to the cap the head D registers With the slot B,whereby said cap is no longer controlled by the head D, and it may then be removed and the carpet drawn over the head of the nec-k and disconnected therefrom.

In order to prevent the Wide part of the neck E from interfering With the rotation of the cap, the central portions of the sides of the slot E are recessed, as at G, thus Widening said slot at its center and affordin g spaces for the entrance of the neck E, the same also serving to pr'event shiftin g of the cap When This canses the cap 'to be held- IOO Havng thns described my nvention, What I elam as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
