Description

(No Model.) A. O. WILGOX.
SASH FASTENER. No. 597,475. Patented Jan. 18,1898.
INVENTOI? W/(L a 25. 7 1 BY A Arrow/Em WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT @FFiCE.
ALFRED O. I/VILCOX, OF NEWMAN, NEW YORK.
SASH-YEAVSTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,4? 5, dated January 18, 1898,
Application filed February 17, 1897. Serial No. 623,876. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED O. W1LooX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newman, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Vindow-Sashes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices for window-sashes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be applied to either the upper or lower part of a sash; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. 1
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a front view of a part of a window-frame and apart of the upper and lower sashes and showing my improved windowfastener in position, and Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 a part of the window-frame and at 6 and '7 apart of the upper and lower sashes, respectively, and connected with the frame 5 is one of the beads 8 by which the lower sash is held in place.
The fastening device which I employ consists of a lever 10, which is provided with an oblong head 11, at one end of which is formed a shank 12, which is provided with a head 1-3, and the head 11 of the lever or the outer end thereof is segmental in form, as shown at 14, and provided. with a metal wedge shaped piece 15, which is secured thereto and which is also slightly curved or segmental in form and which isprovided with a point 16.
The oblong head 11 of the lever is provided on one side with a cross piece or bar, and pivoted to the shank thereof at 18 is a segmental lever 19, the lower end of which is serrated or provided with teeth, as shown at 20, and said lever is provided with a strong contractile spring 21, one end of which is secured to the shank 12 of the lever 10 and the other to the said segmental lever 19, the connection of said spring with the lever 19 being nearer the free end thereof than to the pivoted end.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
IVhenever it is desired to lock or fasten the lower sashes in a closed position, the wedgeshaped piece 16 is forced between the head 8 and the side of the frame of the window directly over the lower sash when the latter is in its lowest position and when the upper sash is in its highest position, and the shank 12 of the lever is then forced backwardly until the head 13 thereof rests on the lower sash and the pivoted segmental lever 19 is swung into position, so that the end thereof will press against the bead or strip 8, as clearly shown in the drawings. In this operation the bar 17, which is secured to the lever 10, will abut against the upper part of the lower sash and the forcing backwardly of the shank 12and said lever will securely clamp the lower sash in any position, and the segmental levers 19 will lock said parts in the desired position, and this operation of the device will securely hold the sashes, as will be readily understood.
This device may also be applied to the bottom of the sash to hold the same in a raised position, as will be readily understood, and my said fastening device is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A fastening device for windowsashes, consistin g of a lever which is provided at one end with a curved wed ge-shaped attachment, said level-being also provided with a cross-bar, adjacent to said attachment, and with a segmental lever which is pivotally connected with the end thereof, opposite said wedgeshaped attachment, said segmental lever being also connected therewith by a spiral spring, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of February, 1897.
ALFRED G. WILOOX.
