COMBINED EXCAVATING AND BACK-FILLING APPARATUS FOR SEWERS, do.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,312, dated January 11, 1898.
Application filed n ry 9, 1897. Serial No. 618,553. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL 1. CALHOUN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and
State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Excavating and Back-Filling Apparatus for Sewers and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and improved apparatus the object of which is to excavate a trench, such asis made in the construction of a sewer, and at the same time to back-fill or cover the completed sewer, the dirt being taken up from the trench in advance of the sewer construction, carried therefrom, and deposited at a distance upon the completed sewer, so that it is handled but once, the ground in advance of the apparatus being untouched,'and the sewer in the rear of the same being fully completed and backfilled.
The invention consists in certain novel features of an apparatus which will befully described below, and the essential portions of which will be pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
The drawings present five views of the preferred-form of my apparatus, Figure 1 being a side elevation of the apparatus complete, showing the manner of using the same in sewer construction. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section in the plane 3 3 of Fig. 2, but showing the device upon a larger scale. Fig. 4. is a detail section in plane 4 4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a similar section, partly broken away, in plane 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Looking first at Figs. 1 and 2, M represents the advanced portion of a trench, and N the customary piling used to sustain the side wallsof the trench and prevent the falling in of the dirt during the building of the brickwork of the sewer. O is a portion of said brickwork.
P is the earth from the excavation piled up upon the completed sewer.
A temporarytrack T is laid along each side of the excavation to support and render easy the moving of the excavating apparatus. A hoisting-car A is run upon this track iinm ediately in advance of the excavation, said hoisting-car being provided with a suitable engine or motor a and a tower a Above the portion of the trench in which the construction of the sewer is going on and just in advance of the back-fill Pisa dumping-car B, upon which is mounted a rearwardly-inclined tower b, extending back over the fill and sufficiently elevated at its end to clear any possible elevation of dirt upon the sewer. This tower is made up of two side frames 19 b the upper portions of which are entirely separate, except at the extreme top, to'allow the passage of the load between them. Both the dumping-car and thehoisting-car are mounted upon wheels b a so that they may be easily moved forward upon the track T as the work progresses.
Between the hoisting-car and the dumpingcar is an open framework F, mounted upon wheels f of sufficient length to span the portion of the trench in which the sewer construction is going on, said open frame being constructed witha minimum number of cross braces or trusses in order that it may not interfere with such construction and being yet of sufficient strength and rigidity to prevent the hoisting-car and dumping-car from being brought together under the strain of the conveying apparatus. Secured to the top of the inclined tower B on the dumping-car is a carrying-cable O. Said cable extends therefrom to the top of the tower 03, upon the hoistingcar, from which it passes onward overa strut a, down to the framework of the car, and is fastened thereto at c. This cable is designed to carry the load of dirt, and for such purpose is provided with a carrier 0 from which is suspended a scoop E by means of a cable 8, running to a drum 6. The carrier is moved back and forth upon the cable O by means of an endless cable D D, running over a pulley d at the top of the inclined tower b, pulleys d d upon the tower a and around a drum d The dirt in the trench is scooped up in 5 the scoop E in advance of the sewer construction, lifted up to the carrier 0 carried across over the advancing brickwork to the inclined tower b, and there dumped upon the completed sewer by means of a tripping'device C. In this operation the great strain of the carryingcable upon the two cars is sustained 'by the open framework F, the same being mounted upon the track in a manner similar to the two cars and moved forward with them step by step as the construction advances.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination in a sewer-excavating and baolcfilling device and with a suitable track adapted to span the sewer, of the hoisting-ear, A, the dumping-car, B, and the intervening open framework, F, all mounted upon wheels on the track, the tower, a and the hoisting apparatus, a, on the hoistingcar, a tower upon. the car, B, said tower be,- ing composed of the two side portions, 6 b the upper portions of which are entirely separate except at the extreme top, a carryingl cable stretched between the tops of the two towers, a carrying device upon the cable, a digging and dumpingdevice connected therewith. and suitable cables and operating devices therefor to load, transport and dump the dirt; substantially as described.
2. The combination in a sewer-excavating and back-filling device and with a suitable track adapted to span the sewer, of the hoisting-car, A, the dumping-car,B, and the intervening open framework, F, all mounted upon wheels on the track, the tower, a and the hoisting apparatus, a, on the hoistingcar, the inclined tower, 1), upon the car, B, said tower being composed of the two side portions, b b the upper portions of which are
