To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr W. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Langley, in the county of Aiken and State of South Carolina, have invented an Improvement in Dredging Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to devices including a dredging or scraper bucket and scooping, hoisting, carrying and dumping means for the bucket, my ob ect generally being to provide an arrangement in which the bucket travels upon a carrier line adapted to be flexibly slackened and tautened to raise and lower the bucket andin which the bucket may be dumped at any point throughout the entire span of the carrier line while traveling at full speed in either direction and can be brought to a stand-still and dumped to a pile or into cars also at any desired point.
In carrying out the objects of my invention I provide an arrangement such as shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the complete mechanism.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the mast, its supports and the adjacent parts.

Referring now to these figures it will be noted that the mast A is stepped upon a roller mounted frame A supported upon a track B and is provided at its upper end with side pulleys a over which a traveling 1 guy line C is extended, the rear end of this line being provided with a sheave c and the forward end thereof carrying the block C having separate wheels for the back line and the carrier lines as best shown in Fig. 1

The complete operating and controlling means are mounted upon a frame D supported upon wheeled trucks D movable upon tracks E. This frame D carries the drums F, G- and H of the back line F, carrier lines G and haul lines H respectively and it is to be understood that these several drums are provided with gearing whereby they may be independently rotated and with brakes whereby they may be independently controlled to put tension upon their respective lines. The frame D is also provided with a stationary upright pulley support D carrying a series of pulleys over which the respective lines extend.
There are two carrier lines G, as will be particularly seen by reference to Fig. 1, formed by passing a single cable around the block G from the drum G and thence back again with its end anchored at 9 upon the frame D, the upper and lower carrier lines respectively extending between pulleys i and i and 2" and i at the opposite sides of the bucket carriage I, it being noted from Figs. 2 and 3 that this carriage consists of side plates spaced apart by a plurality of thimbles i and has a lowerintermediate pulley f downwardly around which the outer portion of the back line F, after passage around the block C, extends.
The bucket K, which is generally rectangular in shape, as seen by reference to Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive, is provided with rings k at its four corners, by means of which it is flexibly suspended from the carriage I, by chains K, and being thus suspended from its four corners, is effectively from accidentally overturning.
The bucket K which has upright side and rear walls K is provided with a single ring is at its rear to which the outer extremity of the back line F after passage around the carrier pulley f as before mentioned, is attached. The forward edge of the bucket is provided with rings 70 extending forwardly from the forward edges of its side walls K for the reception of chains H to which the outer end of the haul line H is secured, other chains H over said forward end of the haul line being connected to the carriage I.
Thus by flexibly slackening and tightening the carrier lines G, the bucket K may prevented I brake upon the back line drum F dumping the material therefrom.

From this it will be seen that the bucket may be dumped without the use of a buffer or attachment to the carrier lines and may therefore be dumped at any point through out the entire span between the operatin drums and the mast, either when at a still or when moving fast or slow, and further without the use of any slide or frame work. i
It will be seen furthermore that when the bucket is drawn in lowered position by the haul lines H in'the digging operation, more or;1ess tension upon the back line F will cause the bucket to dig more or less at the will of the operator.
It will also be seen that the double carrier lines provide strength and, as rigged the entire arrangement provides great power with light engine duty, either the back line F or the haul line H beingentirely slackened when the bucket is drawn in the desired direction.
