HENRY B. SAUERMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
.MATERIAL-MOVING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application sied Februaryv 23, i915. seriai No, 9,885.
To all whom t may concern Be it known ,that I. HENRY B. SAUERMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at,
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Material-Moving Apparatus, of which the following is a specifica` tion.
My invention relates to improvementin material-moving apparatus of the type com.- prising, generally stated, aninclined cableway supporting a traveling carriagethere# on, with a dumping scraper', orbucket, con nected with ,the carriage, and 'a'haul'ingfline through the medium of which the movements of the carriage and bucket are controlled; andv my ob]ects are to provide an Vao sus
illustrated 'in Fig. 1 with the bucket omit,
ted, this view being takenat` the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the' direction of the arrow; Fig. 3is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the bucket in dumped position; Fig. 4 is a. view like Fig. 1 of a modification ofthe construction therein illustrated; and Fig. 5, a view like Fig. 1 of stillv another modification.
The inclined cableway whichwould besupported, in practice, to extend across the material Ato be moved, as, for' example, the ground to be excavated or dredged, is rep-4 resented at 6, and, in accordance with common practice, is so associated with other parts, not shown, as to permit it to be slackened for permitting the bucket to engage withth'e material to be moved, and drawn to taut condition preparatory to the operation of transferring the bucket .to the point of dumping. A
Mounted on the cable 6 to travel thereon is a carriage 7 which, in the construction illustrated, is formed of a pair of frames 8 secured together in spaced relation by spacers 9 and pins 10, the pins 10 having journaled thereon pulleys 11 at Whlch the carriage is supported on the cableway 6 to adapt it to be moved along the latter.'
The dumping scraper or bucket, represent ed at 12, is of a form generally use ff-its forwardopen digging end being provided with a cutting-edge portion 13. According to the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1,
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
the bucket 12 is supported from the carriage.
7 in' such aA manner that when loaded the 'center of gravity of the bucket -will be towardj the rear .of the latter, the bucket in this v construction being supported from the carriage by means of a cable 14 which`is Vconnected at its opposite ends with an eye 15 on the rear end of the bucket 12, and with a bail 16 on the forward end of the bucket,- Ithe cable 14 intermediate its ends running over a pulley 17 journaled onV the carriage -7 between the frame-members 8.
The hauling-line, through themedium of which the carriage and bucket-are moved along the cableway, is represented at 18 and terminates in sections 19 and 20, the section 20 being connected, as indicated at 20, with the forward end of the bucket 12, and the 4section 19 passing over a pulley 21, jour- `naled on a pin 21 on the frame 7 and connecting at one end with the bail 16, as represented. The bucket 12 is also connected at 22il with one end of a cable 22 whichpasses overa pulley 23 journaled on the carriage 7, and thence around a pulley 24 journaled onan arm 25 pivotally connected at 26 to the carriage' and extending rearwardly therefrom, the end of the cable 22 adjacent to the pulley 24 being provided with a block 27 which straddles the cable 6 and is `movable along the latter, the block 27 being provided with a -pulley 28 which engages the cable 6 toreduce friction. is adapted tocoperate, in a manner hereinafter described, with a stop-device 29 adapted to be clamped to the cable G at any desired point along the latta-,and positioned on the cable below the block 27.
In the [operation of the apparatus described, the line 6 is first slackened to allow the bucket 12 to engage with the material to be moved, whereupon the hauling-line 18 is drawn on, causing the bucket to fill.v The operator then causes the cable'6 to become more or less taut as conditions render it desirable, thus lifting the bucket 12 away from the material on the ground and permitting it and the carriage to move down the cableway 6 under the control of the operator paying,
The block 27 nin'go'ver the pulley '17.
out the lhauling-'line 18. vWhenithe carriage moves down on the cable G to a position in which the block 27 engages 'the stop 29,'the
moved to the dumping position Erepresented' in Fig. 3, the cable 14 in thisoperation run- As the centerjof gravity of the loaded bucket is 'toward the rearv'end thereof, lthe movement -for rollingr the bucket into duin ing position is against gravity and is strict y under the control of the operator handling the hauling-line 18, and thus the rollo`ver movement may be a ,irradual 'or a rapid one, as desired.
It will be understood that by adjusting the stop 29 alongr lthe cablcway '6, the dumping: ot'. the bucket may be e'ii'ect'ed at any desired point on the cable. It will be readily understood from the fo'regroiiia" description and 'the drawings that, following the dumping 1of the bucket (lig: 3), thesame may be readily righte'd by pulling on the haulingline 18.
The apparatus illustrated in Fig. 4 is the same -as that illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3, excepting that instead of providing the cable 14 connected at its opposite ends with vthe bucket and "passing over 'the pulley on the carriage 7. and attaching one end 'of the cable 19 to the bail 16, this end of 'the cable 19 is 'attached directly to therarriaegc, as represented at 30, anda 'cable 31, connected with the bail 1G of the bucket'and fixcd'tc the`carriage', as indicated at 32, is provided. It will be readily understood from the"forc going that the operation of the" apparatus just 'described is"substa'ntially the-saine as that of the apparatus shown in' Fig. '1, the bucket 12 beiner in effect pivoted on the cable 31.
The apparatus illustrated in' Fig. 5 is the same as that illustrated in Fig. 1, excepting in the particular of the connection of tho 'cable 22 with the bucket. In this construction, instead of attaching one end of the cable 22 to the bucket, this en'd of the 'cable extends over a pulley B3 jo'urnale'd on the rear end of the bucket, and attaches to the carriage 7 at'the point indicated at 34. It will'be readily understoodtha't with 'the pulley arrangement 'thus provided, tlie'travel 0f the bucket 12, when the 'cable'22 isdiawn on by engagement of the block 27"with the stop 29, will be reduced^onehalf,` as compared with the travel of 'the bucket 'in the construction illustrated i'n Fig. 1,'an'd consequently only Iabout one-half of the poweris required to move the bucket to dumping position as is required compared with -that in the ca'se of the 'construction illustrated in Fig. 1. This arrangement of the pulley 'and cabledevice, however, necessitates the provision of a longer bar-member 25 than is provided in the case of the construction shown in Fig. l.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing that in cach of the constructions illustrated, the bucket, when loaded, normally hangs in load-carrying position and it is necessary in turning the bucket to dump` ing position to act against gravity, which is a great advantage, as the operator may thereby maintain effective control over the 'bucket in the dumping operation.
VVhil'e Ifh'ave illustrated and described oei-'tain ferais in which my invention may be embodied, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered, and the invention embodied in other forms` without departing'rom the spirit of my invention. liurthermore, Ido not wish tio be understood as intending: to limit in v invention to an apparatus wherein a` slack line is employed wit'li a bucket of thc type shown operating thereon, as it may be embodied in an apparatus employing a cable cooperating with ay bucket in the form of a. :io-called skip which would be loaded at one elevation, as by 'duin'iiing the material into it, and then allowed to descend on the line to the point oi dumping at which it would be automatically dumped. as explained of the constructions shown.
