BICYCLE SKIRT-PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,298, dated. January 11, 1898.

Be it known that I, ALFRED Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle Skirt-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to the improvements in skirt-protectors for drop-frame bicycles; and the object is to provide a guard or protector of this class that shall be simple, cheap, and efiective.

To these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. r

In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved guard applied to a drop-frame bicycle. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view, of the guard detached from the machine.

1 represents the front fork, and 2 the handle-bar, of an ordinary'drop-frame bicycle.

3 and & represent two approximately semicircular springwire frames provided with vertical parallel arms 5 6, terminating in eyes 7 8, which encompass the ends of the front axle 9 and are secured thereto by the usual nuts 10 10 to assist in supporting the frames in avertical position. The upper ends of the parallel arms 5 6 terminate in eyes 5 5,\vhicl1 engage the corresponding eyes 6" 6 on the lower ends of the spring-wire frames 3 4 to form a hinge-joint at these points. The upper ends of these frames 3 4: terminate in integral eyes 11 12, which engage the corresponding eyes 13 let on a curved rod 15, extending across the front of and parallel with the handle-bar 2, to which it is adjustably secured bya-suitable lacing-thong 16. These frames 3 and 4 are covered bya suitable fabric 17 18 to form a guard or protector for the skirts and lower limbs of the rider, and 19 20 represent lateral diverging spring-arms fixed to the front post-tube21 and extending downwardly and rearwardly behind the frames 3 and at to prevent the rear edges of said frames from coming in contact with the pedals of the machine when turning to the right or left in making short curves.

When necessary to raise or lower the bandle-bar, the lacing-thong 16 is let out or taken up to compensate for the change, so that the fabric forming the'guard may be kept taut to always present a neat and trim appearance.

Although I have specifically described the several elements of my invention and their relative arrangement, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,

1. The combination with a bicycle of the spring-wire frames 3 4: provided with the vertical parallel arms 5 6 terminating in the eyes 7 8 and having their upper converging ends provided with eyes 11 12, the curved rod 15 connecting said eyes and the fabric 17 18 secured to said frames and rod, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with a bicycle of the spring-wire frames 3 4 secured at their lower ends to the front axle, the curved rod 15 connecting the upper ends of said frames, the fabric 17 18 secured to and forming a guard about said frames and rod and the lateral diverging spring-arms 19 20 fixed to the posttube 21 and extending rearwardly behind the frames 3 4, substantially as shown and described.
