BABY-WALKER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 597,263, dated January 11, 1898.

Be it known that I, EMERSON V. CONWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uhrichsville, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Valkers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in baby-walkers, and the object is to provide a simple, convenient, and effective device of this kind; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the saine, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure l is` a perspective view of my im-y proved baby-walker. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the spring-arm.

l represents the horizontal circular seat, provided with the leg-orifices 2 2 and the circular railing 3.

4 4 represent the ou tivardly-curved legs, the lower ends of which are provided with the f universal casters 5 5, and each leg is adjustablysecured to the seat by an adjustable spring-hinge bracket 6. These brackets comprise a stout plate 7, rigidljT fixed to the upper approximately-horizontal -face of the leg, and the inner end of said plate 7 is connected to a Correspondingly-shaped resilient plate 8 by a hin ge-joint 9. The forward end of the hinged plate 8 extends a sufhcient distance beyond the outer edge of the seat to form a spring-arm 10, and the outer end of this arm is formed with an openended slot l2, which receives the annular groove 13 on the adjusting-screw I4, projecting upwardly from the `*upper face of the leg. This construction forms a spring-support for the leg, and at the same time it may be adjusted by means of the screw 14 to increase or diminish the distance of the seat l from the door.

In practice when the child is placed in the seat the legs 4 4 are so adjusted that the childs toes touch the floor, While the entire weight of the body rests upon the seat. This enables the child to propel itself about the room with ease and comfort and Without any danger of deforming its legs or soiling its clothes, as often happens where it is allowed to learn to walk by standing on its feet and holding onto some object, as a chair or the like, or Where it is allowed to crawl around on its hands and knees to the detriment of itsl clothes.

A very important feature of my invention is the adjustability of the legs, for as the child grows the legs 4 4 may be adjusted to correspond, and this can be done until the child has learned to walk, and consequently has no further use for the walker.

Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modiiications may be made as clearly fall Within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,

l. A baby-walker comprising the seat l, provided with the Aorifices 2 2, in combination with the hinged plate 8 secured to said seat and formed with the slot 12, the plate 7 secured to said plate S by the hinge-joint 9, and the leg 4 rigidly iixed to said plate 7 and the adj listing-screw I4 secured in the upper face of the leg and provided with the annular groove 13, substantially as shown and described.

2. A baby-Walker comprising the circular seat l, provided with the circular orifices 2 2, the plates 8 8 secured to said `seat and formed with the integral projecting spring-arms lO lO having the slots l2 12 in their outer ends, in combination with the legs 4 4, provided with the plates 7 7, adjustably secured to the plates 8 8 by the hinge-joint 9, and the adjusting-screws 14 secured in said legs and provided withannular groove 13 adapted to engage the outer end of the'spring-arm 10, substantially as shown and described.
