V UNITED STATES PATENT EEcE.
LOUISA YVILHELMINA ADOLFZEN, OF HASTINGS, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOTHES-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,838, dated January 4, 1898.
' Application filed April 29, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUISA WILHELMINA ADOLFZEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Gambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes- Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to clothes-holders, and more particularly to that class adapted for holding clothes upon the line while being dried.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and efi'ective device of this character which may be made at small cost and which will securely hold the clothes to the line.
lVith this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved clothes-holder. Fig. 2 is a side View, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal View through one set of clamping-jaws.
The clothes-holder consists of a single piece of wire constructed in the following manner: Starting at thepoint A the wire is bent upward, as at B, thence horizontally, as at C, thence downwardly and inwardly, as at D, thence downwardly and utwardly, as at F, thence horizon tally, thence upwardly and inwardly, as at G, thence formed into a coil H, thence downwardly and outwardly, as at I, thence horizontally, as at J, thence upwardly and inwardly, as at K, thence upwardly and outwardly, as at L, thence horizontally, as at M, and downwardly, as at N. This construction provides two coacting jaws 1 and 2, one of greater breadth than the other, so that the other may pass through it in the act of clamping the clothes to the line, and thus increase Serial No. 634,432. (No model.)
. the friction or clamping action and more effectually retain the clothes in position. This construction also provides two handles or compressor-arms 3 and at, by means of which the jaws are actuated.
In the foregoing description I have described but one set of jaws; but this description will answer for the other set, which is identical with the construction just described and is connected to the first-mentioned set by a horizontal wire, as shown in Fig. 1.
If desired to stiffen and brace the clamping-jaws, I may provide the wire bails 0; but the same are not absolutely necessary.
The device is made from a single piece of wire twisted and bent into the form shown, and by its simplicity of construction may be placed upon the market at small cost, so as to be within reach of all.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
A clothes-holder for the purpose described, consisting of two sets of clamping-jaws provided with operating handles and springs, and with a connecting-rod, each set of jaws and handles made from a single piece of wire bent upwardly from A as at B, thence horizontally as at C, thence downwardly and inwardly as at E, thence downwardly and outwardly as at F, thence horizontally, thence upwardly and inwardly as at G, thence coiled as at H, thence projecting downwardly and outwardly as at I, thence horizontally as at J, thence upwardly and inwardly as at K, thence upwardly and outwardly as at L, thence horizontallyas at M, and downwardly as at N, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 7 signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUISA WILHELMINA ADOLFZEN.
Witnesses ERNST Bnonn, EDWARD TALTON.
