G. W. WATS-0N. DENTAL DISK HOLDER.
No. 596,254. Patented Dec. 28, 1897.

WITNESSES:
momma WASHINGI'ON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. o
GEORGE W'ALLAOE WATSON, OF PASSAIO, NEW JERSEY.
DENTAL DISK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,254, dated December 28, 1897. Application filed A gust 3, 1897. Serial No. 646,921. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WALLACE WAT- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Disk-Holders and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for securing disks or other polishing and abrading instruments upon their mandrels; andits object is to provide an improved mandrel or holder which shall be simple, cheap, and effective, and by means of which the disk or other instrument may be quickly and securely attached and held in place and yet be easily and quickly removed and replaced when desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a mandrel with the disk connected therewith in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the pin removed from the mandrel. Fig. 3 is a view of a mandrel with the disk and pin removed. Fig. a is an end view of the mandrel with the plate removed. Fig. 5 is a view of the plate. Fig. 6 is an end view of the mandrel with the plate in position, but without the pin. Fig. 7 is a View of the under side of the pin. Fig. 8 is a view of the spring.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the accompanying drawings, a represents a dental mandrel, which may be attached to a dental engine in the usual manner, having a plate I) fitted into its outer and larger end and retained in place by any suitable means. This plate 19 has an opening, preferably of circular form, in its face. A spring 0, which is preferably of flat spiral form, is placed beneath the plate I? in such a manner that a free end extends or projects upon the opening in the plate I). The spring may be held in place by the plate b and by the outward pressure of itself against the walls of the mandrel or by any other suitable means. Two or more projections e e extend outward from the face of the plate I) and are received within the hollow head of the pin d when the pin is inserted within the mandrel a.
To attach a dental disk or other abrading instrument to a mandrel containing my invention, the pin d is removed from the mandrel a. The pin dis then inserted in the center of the disk f, which, as ordinarily supplied to the trade, has an opening in the center to receive it. The pin d is then inserted in the opening in the face of the plate I) and pressed down between the free end of the spring 0 and the sides of the opening in the plate I) and of the mandrel. The projections e e will be forced through the disk f and will enter the hollow head of the pin (1. The disk will then be firmly held in place, and the pin will be prevented from slipping or falling out by the pressure upon it of the spring 0 and the resisting side Walls of the plate and mandrel.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a dental disk holder or carrier, the com bination of a mandrel, a pin having an enlarged head or cap, and a spring, within the mandrel, in a plane at right angles to the mandrel-shaft, and with a free end projecting across an opening in the plate to press against the pin, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
G. WVALLACE WATSON.
