No. 596,200. Patented Dee.. 28, 1897.
NTTEn STATES PATENT Erica.
TACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,200, dated December 28, 1897.
' Application led February 8, 1897. Serial No. 622,522. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that we, JOSEPH BRUN TON and DANIEL VIRGIL BRUNTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tacks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in carpvetetacks.
The invention has for its object the con struction of a tack for carpets or other material which is of such form that it may be easily withdrawn from the flooring.
Another object of our invention is to provide a tack for carpets or like material in which the head is entirely hidden from view.
lVith the above objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, as will be hereinafter more specifically described.
In describing; the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a sectional portion of a floor, showing a portion of carpet or like material secured thereto by our improved tacks. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. p Fig. 3 is a front view looking at the tang or prong end of the same. Fig. 4: is a top plan view.
To put our invention into practice, we first construct the tack in a T-shaped form, circular in cross-section at any point. The upper portion of the tack-head l extends out at right angles from the body or shank 2, as shown in the T form, the opposite end of the shank being drawn down to a sharp point, as shown. After the tack is formed in the T shape the shank is bent over in the right-angular form, as shown upon the drawings. t
In using the tack the pointed shank portion is forced up through the carpet or other material from the under side and near its edge and by slightly turning under the edge of the carpet the pointed portion is brought in an upright or horizontal position, when it may be easily driven into flooring, as shown at'Fig. l.
Having thus fully shown and described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tack for carpet or like material comprising a Vshank pointed at one end adapted to penetrate carpet or similar material, and bent substantially at right angles to forni two portions one adapted to penetrate the floor and the other to lie parallel therewith, said shank portion having at its other end a head extending at right angles to the plane of said shank on both sides thereof to form a stop for the shank after it has penetrated the carpet, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we ax our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH BRUN TON. DANIEL VIRGIL BRUNTON. lVitn'esses:
P. B. REILLY, WM. WEITZEL.
