Description
JAMES L. GREGORY AND JAMES GRIEVE, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
SHUTTER WORKER AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,155, dated December 28, 1897. Application filed May'18,189'7. SerialNo. 637,057. (No model.)
' To aZZ whom it may concern:
-Be it known that we, J AMEs L. GREGORY and JAMES GRIEVE, citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating and Looking Devices for Window- Shutters, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for opening and closing and locking window-shutters and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be connected with window-shutters of the usual or any preferred form.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is an outside view of a part of a window, showing the shutters connected therewith and provided with our improved lock, the shutters being open; and Fig. 2, a
side view thereof, showing the shutters closed.
and locked.
In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at 5 an ordinary window-frame, or one side thereof, and at 6 the bottom of said frame, and mounted in said frame is the lower sash 7 and a part of the upper sash 8. Hinged to the opposite sides of the frame 5 are the shutters 9, and one of these shutters is provided with an upwardlydirected hook or fastening device 10, which is secured to the inner side thereof, and the other with a downwardly-directed hook or fastening device 11, which is also secured to the inner side thereof.
Secured to the inner side of each of the shutters and near the outer lower corner thereof is a staple or other fastening device 12, and connected with each of said staples or fastening devices 12 is a locking-bar 13, and these locking-bars 13 are pivotally connected at their free ends, as shown at 14, and also pivotally connected at said point with a curved supplemental locking bar or arm 15.
The inner or free end of the supplemental the supplemental locking bar or arm 15 is.v
adapted to be connected.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
When the window-shutters are open, as shown in Fig. 1, the supplemental locking bar or arm 15 is connected with the headed pin or bolt 18 and said shutters are held in the open position and cannot be accidentally closed by the wind or in any other manner except by the manipulation of the supplemental locking bar or arm 15, and whenever it is desired to close or look the shutters the said supplemental locking bar or arm 15 is detached from the headed pin or bolt 18, and the shutters are closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the locking-bars13 are raised into the position also shown in Fig. 2, and the supplemental locking bar or arm 15 is connected with the hooks or fastening devices 10 and 11, as clearly shown in said figure.
This device forms a very convenient means for opening and closing both shutters simultaneously and an absolute and secure lock for the shutters when closed, and is'also perfectly adapted to hold the same open, as described, and said device is also simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device for opening and closing and locking window-shutters, consisting of bars which are pivotally connected at one end with said shutters, said bars being pivotally connected at their inner or opposite ends and at the same point with a supplemental bar or arm, and said shutters being provided with hooks or other fastening devices which are secured thereto, and in connection with which said supplemental bar or arm operates, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described means for opening,
closing and locking Window-shutters, consisting of bars which are pivotally connected at one end with said shutters, said bars being pivotally connected at their inner or opposite ends, and at the same point With a supplemental bar or arm, and said shutters being provided with hooks or other fastening devices which are secured thereto, and in connection With which said supplemental bar or arm operates, said supplemental bar or arm being also provided at one end with a slot, and the bottom of the Window-frame with a headed pin or bolt which is adapted to pass therethrongh, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention We have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 15th day of May, 1897.
JAMES L. GREGORY. JAMES GRIEVE. Witnesses:
O. Gnnsr, A. C. VAN BLARCOM.
