HAT PIN. N0.595,9211. Patented Dec. 21, .1897.
I I awoewbo'z 060M. who
TO-LITHD.. wumnc-ron n c NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMERY E. RICE, OF CHARLEROI, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT-
PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,920, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed March 2 2 1 8 9 '7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY E. RICE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Charleroi, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pins, of which the followingisaspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat-pins, and has for its object to provide a hat-pin that when placed in the hat will be locked in position and prevented from falling out, as is often the case.
The invention further aims to construct a hat-pin of the above-referred-to class that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture; furthermore, a pin that will be neat in appearance and can be made ornamental or plain, as desired, and, further, thatwill not require any larger opening through the hat than the ordinary hat-pin.
With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of references indicate similar parts throughout both views, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a face view, of my improved hat-pin.
Referring to the drawings by reference-letters, a indicates the pin, having a pointed end, said pin being divided toward the upper end, forming spring portions 1) b, converging together at their upper end and bent trans- Serial No. 628,602. (No model.)
versely, forming shoulders c c. The free ends are then formed in rings or loops d d to compress the spring portions b I) together.
The operation of my improved hat-pin will be readily apparent from the views that I have shown in the drawings, as when the pin passes in the hat and reaches the dividingpoint the spring portions b b will be compressed, as shown in dotted lines, until the pin reaches the shoulders o 0, when the spring portions 1) b will retract and lock the pin in the hat. When it is desired to remove the same, the rings d d are pressed together, thus again forcing the spring portions in the position shown in dotted lines and allowing the removal of the pin.
It will be noted that ornamental knobs or other designs may be substituted for the rings 01 d, and that these and other changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a hat pin, consisting of a pin proper divided at the upper portion into two parts, each of said parts being bent outward and thence inward thus forming the locking portion of the pin, each of said parts are thence bent outward at right angles to the body portion of the pin, and formed into upwardly-extending loops, whereby pressure on the loops will cause the out wardly-bent portions of the 'pin to come into contact for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. EMERY E. RICE.
