Description

(No Model.)
M. A. MORRIS. BICYCLE VALVE.
- No. 595,578. Patented Dec. 14,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THE
SCOVILL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BICYCLE-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,578, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed. August 2 3, 1 8 97- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARION A. MORRIS, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Bicycle-Valves; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a view in side elevation of a bicycle-valve containing my invention; Fig. 2, a view thereof in central longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a view in side elevation of the shell before its prongs are spread; Fig. 4, a similar view of the shell after its prongs are spread, and Fig. 5 a view of the shell in inside elevation after its prongs have been spread.
My invention relates to an improved bicycle-valve, and more particularly to means for holding the rubber packing of the dust-cap of such a valve in place, the object being to provide simple and effective means for the purpose mentioned, whereby the packing of the cap is firmly held in position and prevented from being pulled out of the cap by sticking to the body of the valve when the cap is removed therefrom.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with the cap of a bicycle-valve, of a disk-shaped packing located within the said cap, and a cup-like sheet-metal retaining-shell formed with a plurality of spreading prongs located in the bottom of the cap in position for the entrance of its prongs into the packing, the edges of which are pushed radially outward by the said prongs, which secure the packing firmly in place.
' In carrying out my invention as herein shown I employ a shallow cup-like sheetmetal shell A, formed upon its edge with a series of outwardly projecting or spreading Serial No. 649,164. (No model.)
prongs A, the number of which may be increased or decreased as desired; but prefer ably there will be a circular series of them, as shown. The cup proper is so small that it slightly enters the hollow boss B, formed at the outer end of the cap B, in which the shell is thus centered. When the disk-like packing C, which will by preference be formed of rubber, is introduced into the cap and forced down upon the prongs, they enter the edges of the packing and at the same time spread apart, whereby they exert an eifort to force the edges of the packing against the inner walls of the cap, thus establishinga close fit between the edge of the packing and the said walls of the cap, and also securing the packing firmly in place, so that it will not come out of the cap and so that it will not be pulled'therefrom by adhering to the outer end of the body portion D of the valve when the cap is removed therefrom. The cap and body portion of the valve are threaded together in the ordinary manner. The other details of the valve may be of approved form. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
