Be it known that I, PHILIP L. SHERIDAN, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door Hangers, of which the following is a description reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in door-hangers of that class especially adapted for use with sliding doors in residences and other buildings. In devices of this character it frequently happens that the track or rail, from sagging or other-causes, becomes bent or deflected from a true horizontal plane. The result is that the door binds and fails to slide freely.
It isthe primary object of my invention to provide improved means for overcoming the above-pointed-out difficulty in a simple and convenient manner; and with this end in view the invention consists of the devices and parts or their equivalents, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door-hanger constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plate which is secured to the upper edge of the door. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an edge elevation of the lower portion of the hanger, a part being in section.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates a hanger-frame of ordinary construction provided with a traveling wheel B, which is adapted to travel on the track. (Not shown.) The hanger frame is also provided with a downwardly-extending stem 0, the lower portion thereof being reduced and passing loosely through an opening therefor in a plate D, being finally seated in a recess in the upper edge of the door. The downwardly-extending stem 0 is formed on one of its faces with the inclined lugs E E, which converge toward and meet at their upper ends, forming an approximately inverted-V shape.
The plate D is formed with upwardly-projecting wings F F," between which the stem is arranged. The wings therefore form bearings on both sides of the stem to prevent said stemfrom tilting. One of the wings is pro- Serial No. 647.514. (No model.)
lug E. The outer end of the screw is pro- .vided with the usual recess or slot for the accommodation of a screw-driver for the purpose of turning said screw. In case it is in-' convenient to engage a recess or slot in the end of the screw with a screw-driver the outer end of said screw may be formed square or hexagonal in cross-section, whereby it may be adapted to be readily engaged by a wrench.
In the use of my invention if it is found that the track has become bent or deflected from a true horizontal plane and the door is thereby prevented from sliding freely longitndinally the screw H is turned in the proper direction to either raise or lower the plate D and the door to'which said plate is attached. For instance, if the screw is turned in one direction, so as to cause its inner end to press firmly against one of the inclined lugs, the plate D and the door to which it is attached will be caused to be elevated slightly. -On the other hand, if the screw is loosened the plate and door will be lowered.
By merely screwing'out the screw 11 from the wing the plate D may be readily turned, so as to bringthe apertured wing F on the opposite side to that shown in Fig. 1, so that the screw instead of contacting with the inclined lugE will contact with the companion inclined lug E. This adapts my device for use as either a right-hand or left-hand door-hanger attachment. The same result, however, can be obtained in a more simple manner by also providing the wing F with an inclined screwthreaded opening I. This is shown in Fig. 1, and the screw H is also shown in said Fig. 1 in dotted lines as passing through the opening I.
It will be noticed that the under side of the plate D is provided with a depending tubular boss J, through which the end of the stem 0 loosely passes. This boss prevents the stem from tilting laterally.
What I claim as my invention is- 1.. The combination, of ahanger-frame having a downwardly-extending stem formed on its face with an inclined lug, a plate adapted to be connected to the top edge of a door, and provided with upwardly-extending wings between which the stern passes, and a screw adapted to turn through one of said win gs and bear against the inclined lug.
2. The combination, of a hanger-frame having a downwardly-extending stein provided with oppositely-inclined lugs, a plate adapted to be secured to the top edge of a door, said plate provided with upwardly extending wings, between which the stem is adapted to fit, and a screw adapted to turn through either of said wings, and to bear against either of the inclined lugs.
