Description

UNITED STATES JOSEF WOLF, OE HOBOKEN,
NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNIVERSAL A LOOK-HINGE COMPANY, OE SAME PLACE.
LOOK-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nuo. 379,921. dated MarchZO, 1888. Application filed August 2, 1887. Serial No.245.920. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEE WOLF, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LocklHinges, of which the y following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved lock-hinge of that class by which the-door is firmly retained in Open position when opened and prevented from being closed by drafts or otherwise, the hinge being specially adapted for the outer doors of buildings, car-doors, Svc.; and the invention consists of the combination, with the leaves of the hinge, of a knuckle that is rigidly secured to or cast integral with one leaf of the hinge, said knuckle being provided with an. inclined dange having depressions at opposite ends equidistant from the pintle, and of a spring-bolt arranged in a socket located Outside of the axis of the pintle and made integral with the otherleaf, the rounded-off upper end of the bolt passing along vthe inclined flange of the knuckle and engaging the depressions or sockets at the ends of the saine, so as to hold the door in position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1` represents a side elevation .of my improved lock-hinge for doors in open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse 'section of the same on line a: x, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top View of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- 1 sponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A and B represent the leaves of my improved hinge, which are connected in the usual manner by a pintle, A'. rIhe leaf A is provided with a knuckle,
C, that is cast integral therewith, or attached Vrigidly thereto, said'knuckle being provided with an inclined iiange, C. At the under side of the flange O', and preferably at or near both ends of the same, are arranged depressions or sockets a, which are engaged by the roundedoff end of a spring-bolt, D, that is guided in a socket, D', of the leaf B, which latter isprovided with a recess, b, of sufficient height and width to provide for the inclined flange C of the knuckle C. The socketD of the'springbolt D is located sidewise of the axisof the pintle A and cast integral with the leaf, the axis of the socket being atfthe same distance from the center of the pintle as the centers of the depressions or sockets a a at the under side of 'the inclined flange C. rIhe upper end of the spring-bolt D is provided with an anti-fric tion roller, d, by which it moveseasily along the under side of thelflange C'.- The springbolt D is forced in upward direction by-a strong spiral spring which is interposed between the lower end of the same and the bottom of the socket D', as shown in Fig. 2. When the door is in open position, the spring-bolt D en gages the depression a at the upper end of the iiange C', as shown in Fig. 2, while when the door is placed in closed position it engages the depression at the lower end of the same, as shown in Fig. 4. The pressure of the springbolt on the flanged knuckle retains the door in open position, so that it forms thereby an effective and easily-operated lock-hinge for doors of all kinds. The depression at the upper end may be dispensed with, as thelocking action is mainly required when the door is in open position, "1n which position the spring-bolt engages the depressions at the lower end of the inclined flange.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the leaves of a hinge, of a knuckle attached to one leaf and having an inclined flange, said flange having depressions at diametrically-opposite points of said ange, and aspring-bolt attached to the other leaf sidewise of the connecting-pintle, substantially as set forth.-
In testimony thatIclaim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my namein presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEF WOLF.
