COIN-Box.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,509, dated December 14, 1897.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WYMAN, of Lancaster, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coin-Boxes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

My invention relates to coin-boxes, and especially to such as are used for offertory purposes by depositing coins therein at stated dates.

The object of my invention is to provide a receptacle which will indicate the deposit of each coin therein by a distinguishing mark upon a date printed thereon; and it consists of a shallowT box made of some thin material, such as pasteboard or sheet metal, of a depth preferably less than the diameter of the coin which it is intended to receive and of a length and breadth sufficient to allow of a multiplicity of coin-slots in its upper side equal to the number of deposits for which it is designed.

The top of the box is pierced with a number of coin-slots, and upon this side is pasted a sheet of paper, preferably semitransparent, which bears at intervals over its surface the printed dates on which deposits are to be made, such dates being arranged to register with the slots in the box. Each slot has thus a date over or near it, and the insertion of a coin in any slot breaks the paper, andthe date of the deposit, as well as the fact of its being made, is indicated.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the box complete and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a plan of the box before the paper covering is pasted over the slots. Fig. 3 shows the bottom of the box with a pledge printed thereon.

It will be observed that Fig. l shows a series of fifty-two dates corresponding to the Sundays of the year 1897. These dates may be made of any other desired number and to indicate other days, as may be desired-as, for instance, there may be twelve dates and slots, one for each calender mouth, or one for each week for one-quarterof a year.

Under each date is a coin-slot, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the coin is pushed through it into the box the date is obliterated. If preferred, the date may be placed just above or below the slot and thus not be marred by the insertion of the coin, but the fracture of the paper will indicate that the coin has been inserted.

I prefer to make the box of a depth less than the diameter of the coin, as such construction does not prevent the insertion of the coin at a slight angle, but does prevent its being shaken out.

Fig. 3 shows a blank form of pledge that may be printed on the bottom of the box.

The box is preferably made up Wholly in one piece, so that it is necessary to cut or break it to get out the contents.

Any desired pledge may be printed on the bottom or other side of the box.

I do not limit my invention to the exact means of covering the coin-slots herein set forth, as other devices may be used to indicate the insertion of the coin-as, for instance, the slots may be provided with protections in the form of narrow strips of friable material pasted over their centers.

TWhat I claim isl. A coin-box provided with a series of coinslots, in combination with a friable protection for said slots adapted to be mutilated by the insertion of a coin therein substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A box for offertory purposes provided with a multiplicity of coin-slots, such slots being. covered by an easily-friable material and dated substantially as specified.
