PATENT JOSEPH S. PEDEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CABLE-G RIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,495, dated December 14;, 1897.
Application filed May I2, 1897. Serial No. 636,220. (No model.)
. cable-grip with a guide for the cable which will loosely hold the cable while the car carrying the grip is rounding a curve, thereby preventing the cable from leaving the jaws of the grip and holding it in such position that said jaws may clamp the cable the moment the curve is passed.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cablegrip embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the said grip, the jaws being shown in a closed position; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the grip, the section being taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the jaws of the grip being shown in an open position.
A represents the lower jaw of the cablegrip, and B the upper jaw of the same. The lower jaw A is provided with two grooves 11 in its upper face for the reception of the cable, and the upper jaw is provided with corresponding grooves 12. The cable 13 passes between or through corresponding grooves in the upper and lower jaws of the grip, as particularly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The upper jaw Bis usually of less length than the lower jaw, as shown in Fig. 1.
An adjusting-post 21 is connected with the upper jaw B, being passed through a guidehead 23 on the body of the grip, and the sides 22 of the body are passed through openings in the upper jaw B and are fastened to the lower jaw in any suitable manner. A collar 24 is loosely carried around the body of the grip, and at each end of the said collar 24 a guide is located, consisting of an upper bar 25 and pendent bars-27, also, preferably, an intermediate pendent bar 26. The collar 24 is secured to rods 28, which are held to slide in the said head 23. Any system of leversan angle-lever or other known means-may be employed for raising and lowering the upper jaw of the grip and the guides or pendent bars 27, the latter, as shown, having movement independent of the movement of the gripping-jaws. I
In operation the jaws grip and release the cable in any suitable or approved manner. When, however, a curve is approached, the jaws are separated and the guides connected with the grip will remain extending over the lower jaw to such an extent as to prevent the cable from entirely leaving the jaws, while the car to which the grip is attached will be independent of the cable. After the curve has been passed and the cable is to be gripped it will be found to be in position for engagement by the two jaws when brought together. Under such a construction it is obvious that a car may be made to round a curve, no matter how abrupt, as slowly as may be desired and that the cable may be released at one end of the curve and taken up at the opposite end in the usual way. It is also obvious that the guide attachment may be applied to any form of grip. The guides are seldom raised except when it is necessary to entirely remove the cable from the jaws of the grip.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a cable-grip, cable-gripping jaws and an attachment for one of said jaws, arranged to operate independently of said jaw, the said attachment consisting of guides extending at the sides of the opposing jaw of the grip, forming normally a barrier to the outward passage of the cable from between the jaws, and means for raising and lowering the guides independently of the movement of the gripping-jaws, for the purposeset forth.
2. In a cable-grip, the combination, with the gripping-jaws, of guides located at the end portions of said jaws, independent of the latter'and arranged to extend past the gripping-surfaces of said jaws, as specified.
3. The combination, with a cable-grip, of cable-guides consisting of transverse and vertical members, the latter being arranged to extend across the gripping-surfaces of the jaws, and means for raising and lowering the guides independently of the movable jaw of the grip, as specified.
4. The combination, with a cable-grip, of a guide attachment for the cable, consisting of shoes arranged to extend across the cable and likewise across the gripping-surfaces of the jaws of the cable-grip, the said guide attachmefit being independent of the movement of the jaws of the grip.
