SAFETY GRIP BRA-KE POR CABLE GARS.
No. 451,949. Patented May 12, 1891.
i NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. NAYLOR, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY-GRIP BRAKE FOR CABLE CARSK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,949, dated May 12, 1891.
Application led October 31, 1888. Renewed February 27, 1891. Serial No. 383,125. (No model.)
To all whom iv' may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. NAYLOE, a
vcityzen of the United States, residing in the cit and county of- San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Safety-Grip Brake for Cable Cars, ot' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety-grip brakes for cable cars, which will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, and the letters referring thereto.
Figure l is a broken side elevation of the clutching device open as when the caris running. Fig. 2 is a broken top plan view of the brake; Fig. 3, a broken end view; and Fig. 4, a side elevation, showing the brake clutching the groove bar or rail.
Arepresents the frame by which the clutching device is connected With the axles of the grip-car; B, the under clamp or gripping-jaw; C, the upper gripping-jaw; D, the shank of the lower grip-jaw; E and E', the Shanks of the upper gripejaw. F and F are the connecting-levers which connect the Shanks D, E, and E. The upper extension G of the shank D connects with the foot-lever I-I. The upper end of the lever H passes through the oor of the car J.
The car-Wheel L is shown upon the track R.
In Fig. 3 the bars O, forming the channel or groove through which the shank D of the grip-brake passes, are shown.
The following is the operation of my improved brake: The foot-lever Il is at a convenient place for the gripman to place his foot upon at any instant, and as soon as the 4cable-grip fails to act upon a steep hill and the car is in danger of running away the griplnan places his foot upon thelever H and I, bearing the same down and raising the shank D and under grip-jaw B, and at the same time the levers F and F are operated, rocking upon their fulcrums or center bearings and forcing the shanks E and E and the upper grip-jaw C down, thus gripping the grip-groove tightly and holding the car. By
this means the car can be held at any point,
as by any Well-known device of leverage the pressure may be increased to grip as tightly as required.
Having thus `described my invention, what I CHARLES E. NAYLOR.
