Description

(NoModel.) l 4'I'. H. SIMPSON.
VCAR GOUPLING. n No. 595,351 Patented Deo. 14', 1897.
El E] (/q -E- @CZ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS Il. SIMPSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,351, dated December 14, 1897.
Application led August 1897.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. SIMPSON, a citizen. of the United States, residingat Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvem ent in Car-Couplers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
' My invention has for its object certain new and useful improvements in car-couplers; and
it consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter specified and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an inverted plan View of the head of the draw-bari Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3, Figs. l and 2. Fig.4 is a detail view showing the method of engaging the coupling-pin in the head, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail views illustrating modications inthe manner of engaging theV pin in the head to hold the pin from rotation.
The objects of myinvention include means for holding the coupling-pin from rotating in the head of the draw-bar or coupler and also means to strengthen the head of the draw-bar or coupler. Y
Owing to thestrain upon coupling devices, and especially owing to the increased strain coming upon them in-- consequence of the growing tendency to enlarge the size and weight of cars, it becomes indispensably n ecessary to strengthen the draw-bars or couplers,in order that they may resist the increased strain. Furthermore, inasmuch as the heads of the draw-bars 4or couplers are commonly made of malleable iron, while the knuckles and pins are made of steel, there is an inevitable tendency for the locking-pin when it is permitted to rotate to wear the adjacent parts of the coupler-head, the malleablepcasting of the head being'of softer metal. Itis the purpose of my invention to remedy these diculties and to provide means for securing the desired ends above referred to.
I carry out my invention as follows:
Serial No. 648,915. (No model.)
zontally on opposite sides of the coupling-pin,
as indicated at o. and a2, to permit the insertion of a key A through a corresponding orifice in the base ofthe pin, the. shoulders of the orifices a and c2 engage the key A from turning, and consequently hold the pin O from turning in the head. I would have it delinitely understood, however, that my invention broadly contemplates holding the pin from turning in the head in any suitable manner and by any suitable means. Therefore my object may be accomplished by constructing the pin O with a flattened portion, (indicated in Fig. 5 at 0,) said -pin being cut away to form said flattened portion, the head being formed with a corresponding shoulder (indicated at a3) to engage the flattened face of the pin, or, as shown in Fig. 6, the pin C may be formed with a rib c to engage in the corresponding keyway (indicated atV c4) in the head, or, as indicated in'Fig. '7 the pin C may be cut away at its lower end to form a squared end, (indicated at 02,) the head A being formed with a corresponding opening to receive the squared end lof the pin. In these ways the pin may readily be held from turning in the -head and other means may be employed for accomplishing the same results within the scope of my invention. To prevent the locking-pin from turning in the head will obviously prevent wear upon the head, the knuckle rotating upon the pin. Neither do I limit the application of the means to hold the pin from turning to the lower end thereof, as it may thus be held by suitable means otherwise located. The key A may be a split-key Y IOO The opposite side of the head carrying the knuckle is also constructed with an outer wall AG and with an inner wall A7, (indicated in full lines in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) said inner and outer walls A3 A4 and A6 A7 forming chambers therebetween, respectively, said chambers each being divided by a strengthening diaphragm or brace, said diaphragms or braces being shown at c5 and a6, the same serving to brace the two outer walls adjacent thereto above mentioned, while said diaphragms also brace the front and rear walls of each of said chambers on each side of the mouth of the coupler, said front and rear walls being indicated in Fig. 2 at a7 and as. A head so strengthened may obviously be made of any desired degree of strength.
It will be observed that the inner wall on the adjacent side of the head stops the inward movement of the knuckle. Said inner wall may be of any suitable form.
It is evident that the inner wall of the double walls on each side the mouth extends from the forward end of the corresponding outer wall inward and rearward to the rear portion of the outer wall of the head continuously and unbroken to afford greater strength.
That I claim as my invention is* l. A draw-bar or coupler head constructed with a mouth, and with double walls on each side of the mouth to strengthen the head, the
inner of said walls extending continuously from the forward portion of the outer wall to the rear thereof, for the purpose set forth.
2. A draw-bar or coupler head constructed with a mouth and provided with double walls on each side the mouth, the inner of said walls extending continuously and unbroken from the forward portion of the corresponding outer wall inward and rearward to the rear of the corresponding outer wall ofthe head, substantially as set forth.
3. A draw-bar or coupler head constructed with a mouth, and with double walls on either side of the mouth, said double walls united by a horizontal connecting diaphragm or brace intermediate the top and bottom of said walls, for the purpose set forth.
4. A draw-bar or coupler head constructed with a mouth and provided with double walls on cach side of the mouth, the double walls on each side the mouth united by an inner horizontal connecting diaphragm or brace intermediate the top and bottom of said walls, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. SIMPSON.
