HENRY F. POPE, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL MALLEABLE GASTINGS COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, I'IENRY F. Porn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Car-Coupler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a plan view of two car couplers coupled together and constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one of the couplers, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof partly in section; and Fig. 4 is a plan view partly in section showing another form of the invention.
The greatly increasing stresses which are put upon car couplers by the increase in the length and weight of the trains and locomotives have caused injury to the couplers which, as heretofore constructed, have sometimes proved inadequate to withstand the heavy strains of bulling. The coupler which I have invented and which is described herein overcomes these dilliculties by reason of its great strength and ability to resist bulling strains.
As shown in the drawings, 2 represents the head of the coupler, and 3 is the knuckle. The coupler is formed at its sides with outwardly projecting flanges or wings f and l having flat bulling faces 4: and P. These flanges extend outwardly from the opposite sides of the coupler and are adapted to match and abut against corresponding flanges on an opposing coupler. The flanges are backed up by ribs 7 and 7' which extend rearwardly along the places where the coupler head joins the shank 8 and merge into the shank so as to provide a strong backing for the lugs.
Another part of my invention Which I deem preferable resides in combining with the above features a peculiar contour of the balling face of the coupler and the balling face of the knuckle. As shown in Fig. 1, the bulling face 9 of the coupler and the bufling face 10 of the knuckle are made par- Specification of Letters Patent.

allel and at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the coupler shank, so that when two couplers of this kind are coupled together the face of the knuckle will have a broad balling bearing against the coupler, and this combined with the. bulling bearings pre sented by the faces t reduces to a minimum the liability of fracture due to the strains to which the coupler is subjected. In order to give a thoroughly ellicient balling surface, the upper and lower lines A-A and 13-1 of the contour face of the coupler at the places against which the knuckle of the opposing coupler has a bearing are made horizontal, as shown in Fig. 2, instead of being curved dmvnwardly at the top and upwardly at the bottom toward the guard arm and lugs, as heretofore. Previous constructions in this regard have the consequence that when the couplers are standing at different heights and the knuckle of one coupler opposes the top of the face of the opposing coupler, the bulling surfaces thereon are reduced materially.
The shank of the coupler is provided at its sides with vertical shoulders 11, and with transverse horizontal bolt holes 12. When the coupler is attached to the frame of a radial draft gear, the side plates of the frame are abutted against the shoulders 11 and are fixed to the shank by bolts extending through the holes 12. The base of the shank also has holes 13 for receiving lugs on a wearing plate.
Other mmlil'icaitions may be made by those skilled in the art. The coupler is especially designed for use with a radial draft gear.
I claim as my invention:
1. A car coupler for radial draft gears having vertically-extending shoulders at its sides, said shoulders being located to the rear of the coupler-head, laterally-projecting balling l'langcs at each side of the head, and webs 1n-ojecting laterally from said head and extending from said balling flanges to the 'crtically-extending shoulders.
2. A car coupler for radial draft gear having a head, a shank and integral balling flanges projecting laterally from the head and Webs projecting rearwardly from and In testimony whereof, I have hereunto integral With said flanges and laterally from set my hand.
and integral with the headand shank at HENRY F. POPE every polnt throughout thelr length and V 5 terminating in vertically disposed shoul- Witnesses:
ders on the shank, the said shoulders being HARRY T. KRAKAW, adapted to abut against a supporting frame. HARRY E. ORR.
