AHmmm Ill NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JAMES ALEXANDER 'GRAHAM AD JAMES ARTHUR MCGEE, OF LORAIN, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLINGf SPECIFICATIQNforming part of Letters Patent No. 588,821, dated August 24, 1897'.
Application filed April 29, 1897. Serial No. 634,335. (No model.) 4 Y T0 all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that we, JAMES ALEXANDER GRAHAM and J AMES ARTHUR MCGEE, citizens of the United States, residing at Lorainin the county of Lorain and State of Ohio',`have inven ted certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertai'ns to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to car-couplers, and more particularly to means for connecting a chaing or buffer plate and a draw-head with the rear end of a locomotive-tender, and its novelty and advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinalsection of our improvements in position upon a locomotive-tender. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line x a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a detailperspective view of the draw-casting, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the chaiing or buffer plate.
In the said drawings similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the several views, referring to Which- `A indicates a portion of a locomotive-tender, and B indicates the draw-casting, whichl forms part of our improvements and is connected to the rear end of the tender by bolts or other suitable means. This draw-casting B has the central socket a, with coincident apertures b in its upper and lowerwalls, the lugs c forming continuations of the side walls of the socket d, and having coincident apertures cl and the vertical'seats e. at opposite sides of the socket d, which seats are of dovetail form in cross-section, With their lower and upper endspreferably open, and are slightly tapered or slightly reduced in Width toward their. lower ends, so as to support the arms of the chaiing or buffer plate presently described.
C indicates the draw-head, which may be of any desired type, although the automatic knuckle type is preferred. This draw-head has a stem g, provided with vertical apertures h, said stem being arranged in the socket aofthe draw-casting and being secured therein by thev pin D, which extends through the registered apertures b h of the draw-casting and stem f, as shown. The said draw-head is also provided with the usual pin i, which is connected by a chain j with the arm 7c of a rock-shaft Z, which is journaled in suitable bearings on the tender A and extends to opposite sides of the same'in the usual manner.
E indicates the hating or buffer plate, which is disposed transversely and rests in a plane above the draw-,head C. This pla-te E has' outer arms F, which are provided with end portions m, of dovetail form in cross-section, to take into the seats c of the draw-casting, and said plate also has the inner arms G, which are designed to rest between the lugs 'c of the draw-casting and be connected thereto by a bolt H, which takes through the apertures CZ of the said lugs and through apertures it in arms G, and is preferably secured against casual displacement by a nut 1J and a Cotterpin r, as shown, although other means may be employed for the purpose, if desired.
It Will be observed from the foregoing that the chating or buffer plate is connected with the draw-casting in such a manner that casual disconnection of the sameis effectually prevented. While this is so the connection is such that it can be quicklyT and easily effected, and is further desirable because it permits of the chatlh g or butter plate being readily disconnected from the draw-casting.
It Will also be observed from the foregoing that the bolt l-I, which connects the arms G of plate E with the draw-castin g, rests above and adjacent to the upper end of the pin D and effectually prevents casual rising of said pin, thus rendering it unnecessary to secure said pin with a split key or Cotter-pin, as is usually done.
As better shown in Fig. 5, either one or both of the arms F on plate E areprovided 'with large apertures s to permit of the bolt H being introduced to its operative position.
` Having thus described our invention, what we claim isl. The combination of a draw-casting having vertical seats of dovetail form in crosssection in its face or outer side and also having lugs provided with transverse apertures, a @hating or buer plate having arms pro- ICO cross-section placed in the seats of the drawcasting and also having other arms provided with transverse apertures, and a bolt extending through the apertures of these latter arms and the apertures in the lugs of the drawcasting, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a draw-casting having a socket provided with pin-holes in its lower and upper Walls and also having lugs above and at the opposite sides of the socket provided with transverse apertures, a drawhead having a stem arranged in the socket and having' a vertical aperture, a pin extending through the apertures in the socket- Walls and stem, a chafing or buffer plate having arms provided with apertures, and a transverse bolt extending through the lugs of the draw-casting and the arms of the chafing or buffer plate and resting immediately above the pin so as to prevent the same from rising, substantialiy as speciied.
3. The combina-tion of a draw-casting having vertical seats of dovetail form in crosssection in its face orouter side and also having the socket between said seats and the apertured lugs above said socket, a drawhead having a stem arranged in thc socket, a connecting-pin extending through the walls of the socket and the draw-head stem, a chafing or buffer plate having outer arms provided With end portions of dovetail form in cross-section placed in the seats of the drawcasting and also having` inner arms provided with transverse apertures, and a bolt eX- tending through these latter arms and the apertures in the lugs of the draw-casting and resting above and in the same vertical plane as the connecting-pin to prevent the same from rising, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of a draw-casting having a socket, a draw-head having a stein arranged in the socket of the draw-casting, a connecting-pin taking through the Walls of the socket'and the stem of the draw-head, a chang or buffer plate, and a bolt connecting said chaing or buffer plate and the drawcasting; said bolt beingarranged above and .in the Same vertical plane as the connectingpin to prevent rising of the same, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a draw-casting having vertical seats of dovetail form in crosssection in its face or outer side, and a chafug or buffer plate having arms provided with dovetail end portions arranged in the seats of the draw-casting and other arms connected by a bolt with said draw-casting, substantially as specified. I
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
