JOHN F. WALLACE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,246, dated February 7, 1882.
' Application filed November 17, 1881. (No model.)
.To all whom tt may concern:
low down, so as to hold the pin in as nearlya Be it known that I, JOHN F. VALLAGF'., of perpendicular position as possible.
Pittsburg, in the county ofAllegheny and State ofPennsylva-nia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear,- and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of my specification, in whicht Figure l is a plan view of two opposite and meeting draw-heads, Ishowing my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of one of the draw-heads. Fig. 3 is a view of the face of the draw-head. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the draw-head. p
Like letters of reference refer to like parts wherever they occur. v
My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of safety car-couplings wherein the coupling is effected by introducing thelink through a side opening in the draw-head, and has for its object t0 re-enforce the draw-head and provide a guide for the coupling-link, for which purpose a brace is provided on the slotted side ot' the draw-head. and guide-lugs are arranged in front of and in line with the hole ofthe coupling-pin, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
I will now describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art may Imanufacture and use the same.
In the drawings, a represents the face ofthe draw-head, in which is the opening or mouth b, through which passes the coupling-link c. This openingb extends through one side ofthe drawhead, and flares ou the lip d, so as to form an opening, b, in the side of the draw-head. On the upper and lower side of the o-pening b are formed bulges or projections e, which are designed to prevent one draw-head becoming wedged within another, and also to actas guides to the link and supports to the pin. On the side ofthe draw-head on which is the opening b is a brace,f, which is designed to overcome any weakness imparted to thatside ofthe drawhead by the opening, and which may extend any desired length along the side. The pinhole g, which runs through the draw-head, is situated as near the face of the same as the strength of the metal will allow. In the back of the pin-hole g is a recess, g', which acts as a rest or stop for the pin h. Thisstop is situated The operation of my improved coupling is as follows The cars being situated so that their draw-heads touch each other, the link c is inthe link shall pass under the pin-hole so astov 'prevent miscoupling, and also as a support to the coupling-pin. When the cars are coupled, by moving them so that they come together the pin h is placed in the hole g so that the pin shall rest on the stop g', and as soon as the link en ters the mouth of the draw-head and the cars come together the jar causes the pin to fall through the link cinto the openingg in the lower portion of the-draw-head. This stop g is situated low down, so that the jar will not cause the pin to fall out ofthe pin-hole g. This opening g being placed near the front of the draw-head, cars having their draw-heads on different planes can be coupled together by a plain link. In order to allow of the pin-hole to be so situated, the draw-head is made strong by a sufficient thickness of metal above and below the mouth b, and also on the side of the face of the draw-head opposite to the openingb.
The advantages of my invention are that the cars may be coupled from the side of the drawhead instead of in front of and between the draw-heads,` as heretofore. coupled or uncoupled and the link may be removed while the draw-heads of the two cars are touching each other, which cannot be done by the devices heretofore generally in use. The projections c serve to prevent the draw-heads from being injured hyjamniing, and also serve as a guide to the link in coupling the cars, and thereby diminish the danger of uncoupling, and the pin-hole, being situated close to theface of the-'draw-head, partially does away with the use of bent links in coupling/cars having drawheads situated on different planes.
The cars maybe 3. The draw-head having the flaring lateral link-opening, the link-guides and re-enforces arranged in front ot' and in line with the hole of the coupling-pin, and the transverse brace or reenforce upon the slotted side of the drawhead, substantially as and for the purpose specifled.
1n testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN F. WALLACE.
