Description

(No Model.)
M. FOX 8: N. SNYDER. SNOW GUARD.
No. 595,295. Patented Dec. 14, 1897.
UNTTnn STATns PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES FOX AND NATHANIEL SNYDER, OF EAST BANGOR, PENNSYLVANIA.
SNOW-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,295, dated December 14, 1897. Application filed September 8, 1897. Serial No. 650,927. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, Mosils FOX and NATHANIEL SNYDER, citizens of the United States, residing at East Bangor, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful I1nprovements in Snow-Guards and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in snow guards or fenders adapted to prevent the snow from sliding or falling from the roofs of buildings, and it has for its object primarily to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character that can be readily applied to the roof and removed therefrom, if desired.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the course of the following description, all looking toward improving and simplifying devices of this character generally, my invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of simple parts that will be hereinafter fully described, and the points of novelty will be particularly set forth in the claims.
The objects of the invention are accomplished by the simple means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device secured to a roof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section upon the line a; of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the fender or guard, which may be of any suitable material and is preferably formed in the shape shown, which, in carrying out our invention,we provide with a rightangular portion 2, having depending side flanges 8, provided with inclined shoulders 4, adapted to embrace the correspondingly-inclined edges of the broadened lower portion of a bar 5, which is provided with a series of inclined recesses 6 for the passage of nails, screws, or other convenient means by which the device is attached to the roof.
It will be seen that the upper end of the bar 5 is of such width that it will readily enter the recess in the right-angular portion of the fender, thus enabling the fender to be placed upon the bar and slid to the lower end thereof, where its downward movement will be limited by the oppositely-diverging edges of said bar.
It is obvious that the invention herein set forth is susceptible to many minor changes and modifications involving mechanical skill which may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof. We do not, therefore, desire to limit ourselves to the precise construction shown in the drawings as, for instancef we do not desire to limit ourselves to the particular means for attaching or securing the device to the roof or to the particular shape of the fender.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A device of the character described comprising a bar having a broadened lower end, a fender or guard having a recess or slot in its lower portion for the reception of said bar, said slot or recess being so shaped that the downward movement of the fender or guard is limited by engagement with the edges of the broadened portion of the bar, and means for securing the bar to the roof, substantially as described. W
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bar having a broadened lower portion having oppositely-inclined side edges, a guard or fender having a recess therein formed with depending side flanges having oppositelydnclined shoulders adapted to engage the inclined shoulders upon the side edges of the broadened portion of said bar whereby the downward movement of the fender is limited, and means for securing the device to the roof, substantially as described.
3. I11 a device of the character described, the combination with a bar adapted to be secured to the roof and having the lower broadened portion formed with oppositely-inclined side edges, a fender provided at its lower end with a right-angular portion recessed throughout its length and having depending side flanges formed with oppositely-inclined shoulders adapted to engage the inclined side edges of the bar, and means for securing the device to the roof, substantially as described.
clined edges of said bar, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof We have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- I 5 ing Witnesses.
MOSES FOX. NATHANIEL SNYDER.
Witnesses HARRY AMY, DANIEL BUTT.
