DlSCHARGE-NOZZLE AND VALVE THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,014, dated December 7, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. DooLIT- TLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aspen, in the county of Pitkin and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Discharge-Nozzles and Valves Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to discharge-nozzles such as employed for applying power to waterwheels, but has particular reference to the controlling-valves used in connection therewith.
As a primary object the invention contemplates a most economical and effective utilization of the propelling-stream under all conditions of work imposed upon the wheel. To this end a double valve is provided the gateplates whereof work synchronously, but in opposite directions, over the end of their nozzle. These gate -plates are in controllable communication with a suitable governor, thus automatically regulating the volume of water discharged. They are also by preference vertically arranged and operate from center to circumference of the nozzle, so that the drivingstream is at all times projected upon the wheel-blades or buckets in a direction tangent to the wheel itself.
As a further object the foregoing construction comprises a valve mechanism peculiarly sensitive and responsive in its operation-a most important quality, especially when used in connection with electrical appliances and machinery.
The invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims following.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification and whereon like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l represents a side elevation of my invention shown in its operative relation to a section of, waterwheel rim. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of nozzle with gate-plates and beveled gearing for actuating said plates over the end of nozzle. Fig. 3 is a central horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. a is a plan view of parts shown by Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a central vertical section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4; and Figs. 6 and 7 are detached detail views illustrating in perspective the main side arms or supports foreach gate-plate, together with the integral segment-gear by which actuated.
Reference being had to the drawings and letters theron, A is a fragmentary view of a water-wheel rim, and B indicates a dischargenozzle located adjacent thereto, as shown by Fig. 1. The nozzle B, which has converging walls a, is in communication with a suitable source of Water-supply, (not shown,) and at one side is indented by a depression b, constituting a seat for the extremity of a horizontal valve-stem C. Keyed to the rotatable stem C is a bevel-gear D for purposes that will later appear, while the opposite end of said stem C finds bearings in a fixed cap, serving also as means for preventing a longitudinal movement thereof. Above and below nozzle B, diametrically opposite each other, are integral lugs c c with squared surfaces, (best shown by Fig. 5,) into which are screwed upper and lower vertical studs E F, respectively. These studs are counterparts one of the other, each having a central reduced portion d and a further reduced screw-threaded extremity e, the latter to receive a retainingnut f.
Upon the main body portion of upper stud E and the reduced portion CZ of lower stud F are rotatably mounted coacting side arms G H, which converge toward their outer ends and swing in a curve coincident with the eX- tremity of nozzle B, having the studs aforesaid for its center, while upon the reduced portion d of same upper stud E and the main body portion of same lower stud F is mounted a second coacting pair of side arms I J of similar construction and of corresponding action. These side arms G, H, I, and J, thus journaled upon opposite sides of nozzle B, are
connected in pairs by corresponding gateplates K L, each dressed upon the under surface to conform with the curved extremity of nozzle B, reinforced upon the upper surface by a strengthening-rib g, and detachably retained in place by cap-screws 7i. The outside arms I and H of each pair differ from their mates G and .I in the addition to each of a segment-gear M N, by preference cast integral with each of said arms, respectively, having beveled teeth@ extending tof one side and meshing with those of the beveled gear D, iixed upon Valve stem C, whereby said segment-gears and dependent parts may be oscillated in either direction.
In the construction of a' nozzle and its valve according to this invention it will be observed that the shoulders formed upon studs E F at the intersection of their reduced portions d serve to prevent friction between the adjacent side arms of each pair, and by the jamf ming of nuts f f all of said arms G, II, I, and
J may be locked in closed relation, while their ends and the end of nozzle B are all turned up in a lathe together. It` may be further stated as an advantageous consequence of the peculiar arrangementv andy combination of parts heretofore shown and described that. the increased'. effciency' of the present valve is due in no Small'` degree tothe relativeposition occupied' bygate-plates K L and the nozzle B-thatis toV saythe manner of pivoting the former; upon the latter. The reverse action of that last described is equally true and apparent, soi that said gate-plates under iniiuenee ofv the: governor are automatically opened or closed much or little, according to requirements,withoutin the least detraeting' from the-efficiency of the Wheel.v The driving-- stream is in no manner deflected by'a partial closing.' ofA the; controllingevalve, but, on the contrary, maintains a direction tangential to the Wheel-rim under all conditions and deliv-V ers directlyupon its buckets Without WasteV or undue Wear upon the Wheel.

In a discharge-nozzle, the combination with a pair of gate-plates Working in opposite directions over the end thereof, of a pair of side arms supporting each of said plates pivotally connected to the nozzle in a common plane passing through its axis, a segmentgear in communication with each pair of side arms, and a rotatable gear-Wheel in mesh with the segment-gears for actuating them in reverse directions, substantially as described.
