P.-ARTH.
FOLDING BED.
No. 594,510. Patented Nov. 30,1897.

WITNESSES I @ZNVEW'TOR W W ATENT FFICE.
PHILOIWIENA ARTH, OF DOVER, MISSOURI.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,510, dated November 30,1897.
Application filed December 17, 1896- Serial No. 616,055. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LPHILOMENA ABTH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Dover, in the county of Lafayette and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in folding beds and the like, and has for its object the production of a folding bed-frame provided with simple, durable, and efficient mechanism for preventing the accidental folding of the bed.
To the accomplishment of this and other objects my invention consists in providing a stationary frame with locking mechanism, which, when not in use, will permit the folding of the bed, and which, when in the locked position, will securely retain the hinged bedframe in a rigid position.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of a folding bed provided with my device, the bed-frame proper being shown locked in the horizontal position. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the locking-lever out of use and the folding frame slightly elevated. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the spring-latch.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the upright or stationary frame of a folding bed provided with suitable ornamentation and supporting a folding bed-frame 2, pivoted at one extremity, as indicated at 3, to the lower end of the upright frame 1.
4 indicates a vertical shaft carried in suitable bearings 5 upon the frame 1 and having a right-angular extension or locking-lever 6 upon its lower extremity. The locking-lever is designed when out of use to lie snugly against the frame 1 to permit of the elevation of the folding bed-frame, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When, however, it is desired'to lock the bed in the unfolded position, the bed-frame is swung down to the position indicated in Fig. 1 and the lockinglever is turned, as indicated in the drawings, to a position substantially at right angles to the vertical frame, in which position it will resist the folding of the bed.
7 indicates the latch element of the look ing mechanism, which preferably consists of a spring-latch 8, secured at one extremity, as
illustrated at 9, to the folding frame and provided with a transverse socket 10 for the reception of the locking-lever and with an upturned end 11, intended to facilitate the engagement of said lever with the latch. Any suitable means for swinging the locking-lever may be providedas, for instance, a knob 12, located at a convenient point upon the shaft 4.
It will thus be apparent that I have pro duced a simple and efficient locking device, by means of which the folding frame maybe securely locked in a depressed position, but which at the same time opposes no resistance to the folding of the bed when the same is not desired for use.
I do not desire to limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but reserve to myself the right to change, modify, or Vary them at will within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary frame and a folding frame, of a shaft carried in suitable bearings upon the stationary frame and provided with a locking-lever, and means for rotating the shaft, substantially as specified.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary frame, of
a shaft carried in suitable bearings thereon,
a locking-lever operatively connected with said shaft and folding frame, and a springlatch in said folding frame designed to retain the locking-lever, substantially as specified.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary frame and a folding frame, of a shaft carried in suitable bearings thereon and provided upon its opposite ends with a locking-lever and actuating mechanism respectively, and a spring-latch carried by the folding frame and designed to retain the locking-lever when the same is turned to the locking position by rotation of the shaft, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHILOMENA ARTH.
