Description

(No Model.)
M. PALK. TOBACCO BOX.
No. 594,071. PatentedNov. 23, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES FALK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOBACCO-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,071, dated November 23, 1897. I
Application filed October 9, 1896. Serial No. 608,360. (N0 m l-l To all whom, it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, MosEs FALK, a citizen of the United States, residingin the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Boxes,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles for holding smoking-tobacco, and has for its object to provide a box for holding smoking-tobacco, by means of which the box can not only be readily filled with tobacco, but also by means of which the necessary quantity of tobacco can be discharged from the box for filling a pipe without spilling and wasting the tobacco and without exposing and disturbing the main portion of the contents of the box.
The invention consists in a tobacco-box constructed and arranged as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of a tobacco-box constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2'is a view illustrating in longitudinal and vertical section the particular construction of the cover of the box in accordance with this invention.
In carrying out this invention a box 1, of tin or other material and of any suitable shape, is provided, having a cover 2, which can be hinged thereto or slide onto the top of the box, as desired. At one side of the cover 2 the latter is formed with a depressed portion or cavity 3, preferably circular in shape and having a tapering edge or side 4, which is located so close to the edge of one end of the cover 2 and to the side of the box 1 as to form therewith a discharge lip or nose for the guidance of tobacco discharged from the box 1. The bottom of the depressed portion 3 is formed with an opening 5 at the side adjacent to the edge of the cover, as aforesaid. The bottom of the depressed portion 3 of the cover 2 is provided with a second cover adapted to be moved away from and over the opening 5 to open and close the latter. The second cover may be a sliding cover or, as shown, a
swinging cover 6, pivoted at 7 to the bottom of the depressed portion 3 and provided with a handle 8 to operate the same.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. The boXl being filled with granulated or other short and square-cut smokingtobacco and it being desired to fill a pipe the cover 2 is opened, and the lip or'nose-like edge of the side of the cover 2 of the depressed portion 3 being held over the bowl of the pipe the box 1 is tipped or tilted, so that the tobacco will pour outof the box over the said lip or nose edge and the pipe filled without spilling and wasting the tobacco and without having to open the main cover 2.
' As illustrated, the parts are exaggerated in size, as at the point 9, where the said lip or nose is located, at said point 9 there being a narrow lip or nose, as shown in Fig. 2, serving, like the nose of a pitcher, to permit the tobacco to readily pour out.
By means of this invention the tobacco is prevented from getting dry and wasted and a small quantity can always be readily discharged without exposing the main portion thereof.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tobacco-box, havingv a hinged cover, formed with a depressed portion, or cavity at one side thereof, and adjacent to the edge of the cover, and a raised portion at the other side, an opening in the bottom of said cavity and a cover movable over said opening, said cavity having an inclined edge or side, forming with the edge of the hinged cover and side of the box a lip or nose, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Atobacco-box, having a hinged cover, formed with a depressed portion, or cavity at one side thereof, adjacent to its edge, and a raised portion at the other side, said cavity having a tapering edge or side, which forms with the edge of the hinged cover a discharge lip, or nose, an opening in the bottom of said cavity, and a cover and handle located at the bottom of said cavity and movable over said opening, as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of October, 1896.
