I fWMV NITED STATES FFICE.
JOHN H. MURNAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM J. KELLY, OF SAME PLACE.
FIREMANS TOOL AN HOSE CARREER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,901, dated November 16, 1897. Application filed April 2, 1896. Renewed October 4, 1897. Serial No- 654,039. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. MURNAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Firemens Tool and Hose Carriers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in firemens tool and hose carriers, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a detail sectional view of the pivoted locking-lever and its spring-latch, and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view showing the device in use.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The invention consists of a waist-belt A, having in one end a buckle B, by means of which it may be strapped around the body of the wearer, as represented in Fig. 3. To said Waist-belt A is secured a shoulder supporting-strap O, adapted to be buckled to a strap D, secured to the belt A and provided with a buckle E, as shown in Fig. 1. To one side of the belt A or a plate or leather piece F, attached thereto, is firmly secured'a metal plate G, having a pair of outwardly-projecting rods or arms H and I, as shown.
To the rod I is pivoted at i the lever K, the free end of which is adapted to fit into a forked recess h in the outer end of the rod 11 and adapted to be held locked relative to the latter by means of a hooked spring-latch L, having a thumb-piece or projection Z in its forward end, as shown in Fig. 1.
The dotted lines M in Fig. 1 represent a firemans ax or other equivalent tool-such as, for instance, a hammer, dog-iron, life-line, or other implement used by firemen in fighting fires.
The rods or arms H I are provided on their under sides preferably with cleat projections H I, as shown in Fig. 1, adapted for the securing to said arms of a life-line in case the device is to be used as a portable fire-escape for lowering a person from an upper story in case of fire in the building.
For the purpose of attaching an ax, hammer, or any other tool to the belt Ait is only necessary to press outward the spring-latch L, so as to release the lever K, after which the latter is raised, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the tool suspended on the arms H I, after which the lever K is returned to its normal locked position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1.
The shoulder-strap C serves to hold the belt A and tools suspended therefrom from dropping down and serves to convey the weight of such tools, &c., from the belt to the shoulder of the person using it.
The device is also useful for suspending from the belt the nozzle N of a hose-pipe 0 when the fireman is going up a ladder or otherwise carrying a hose-pipe, thus leaving his hands free to more efiectually proceed in getting access to the burning building, as fully represented in Fig. 3.
As above stated, the invention is a very effective and practical device for enabling firemen to suspend from their belts axes, hammers, dog-irons, or other tools, as well as life-lines or hose, so as to be readily accessible when needed and at the same time leaving the arms of the fireman free in ascending ladders, &c., for reaching the fire in the building.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. In combination with the waist-belt A and shoulder-strap C secured thereto, the metal plate Gr secured to said belt and having outwardly-projecting arms II, I, a lever K pivoted to one of said arms and adapted to be locked to the other arm substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the waist-beltAand shoulder-strap O secured thereto, the metal plate G secured to said belt and having outwardly-projecting arms 11, I, downwardlyprojecting cleats on said arms and a lever pivoted to one of the arms and adapted to be locked to the other arm substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 19th day of March, A. D. 1896.
JOHN H. MURNAN.
