4 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for supporting a gun being carried by a sportsman, or military personnel.
The object of the invention is to provide a device to be used by a sportsman or the like for supporting a gun, whereby the sportsmans arms will be relieved. from the weight of the gun, and wherein the gun is readily accessible to the user as needed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gun support which includes a socket member for supporting the stock of the gun therein, the socket member being pivotally connected to adjustable straps which are arranged in engagement with the users body, whereby the gun can be arranged at any desired location in front of the body.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gun support which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing a sportsman carrying a gun supported by the device of the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevational view of the socket member;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 4;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the socket member;
Figure is an enlarged fragmentary front elevational view showing a portion of the connecting bracket; and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 6 of Figure 5.
Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown a device that is adapted to be used by Sportsmen or military personnel for supporting a gun. The device of the present invention includes a ilexible harness strap IIJ that is arranged in engagement with the shoulders of the user as shown in Figure 1. The harness strap Il] includes a buckle II whereby the strap I can be adjusted to the desired position by the user.
A bracket I2 is provided with a triangular shaped portion I3, and the portion I3 is connected to the lower front end of the strap I0. An open ended socket member I4 serves to support therein the stock I of a gun or rifle IE, Figure 1.
Arranged in surrounding relation with respect 2 tothe users waist, is a exible belt or strap II which is provided with a buckle I8 whereby the strap II can be adjusted as desired.
The socket member I4 includes sidewalls I9 that are secured to a bottom Wall 20. The bottom wall 26 of the socket member is provided with a plurality of spaced openings or apertures 2I for the drainage therethrough of water, melting snow, or the like. Arranged in the bottom of the socket member I4 is a pad 23, which may be fabricated of leather, and the pad 23 serves to deaden the sound of the stock I5 while the riile is being supported in the device of the present invention. The sound deadening pad 23 is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 24 which register with the openings 2| in the bottom wall '2U whereby water can drain therethrough and out of the socket member.
Arranged in the socket member I4 is a lining pad 25 which may be of any suitable material, such as eece or felt, and the lining pad 25 prevents the stock I5 of the gun I6 from being scratched or otherwise damaged by the member I4. The pad or lining 25 also helps to deaden the sound of the gun stock I5 being carried in the socket member I4. A ilange 26 surrounds the upper exterior end of the socket member I4, and -a portion of the pad 25 is interposed between the iiange 26 and the sidewalls of the socket member I4, as best seen in Figure 3. Suitable securing elements, such as rivets 21, project through the ange 26, and through the walls of the socket member I4 for maintaining the pad 25 in the socket member I4. The flange 26 also serves to enhance the attractiveness of the device.
A swivel screw or bolt and nut assembly 28 projects through the rear portion of the socket member I4, through a bushing 29 which is arranged in the strap II, and through an opening 30 in a sleeve 3|. The sleeve 3| is secured, as by welding, to the intermediate portion of the bracket; I2, as shown in Figure 5. The bolt and nut assembly 28 thus provides a pivotal connection between the socket member I4 and the carrying straps I0 and I'I. The lower portion of the bracket I2 is bent inwardly, as at 32, Figure 3, and the portion 32 of the bracket I2 slidably bears against the socket member I4 so that the socket member I4 will be prevented from tilting away from the user when the gun is being supported therein.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that a device has been provided which is especially suitable for supporting a gun I 6, that is being carried the gun i6.
by the sportsman or the like. By using the device of the present invention, the user will not become fatigued from carrying the rifle or gun, and the gun is conveniently supported in the socket member M so as to be ready for instant use. Further, the strap l can be adjusted as well as the waist belt l1, so that the socket member I4 can be adjusted to the most comfortable location in iront of the user. The bolt and nut assembly 28 provides a pivotal connection between the socket member I4 and the waist and harness strap so that the gun I6 can be supported at any desired angle in front of the users body. Further, the support member has the pad 23 and the pad 25 therein, whereby the stock of the gun I6 will not be scratched or otherwise damaged, the gun further being carried without having the stock of the gun bang against the support member l.
It is to be understood that the device of the present invention can be used by target or trap shooters, as well as for military purposes, such as sentry duty. By using the device of the present invention, the vgun is supported in front of the user in a substantially vertical position, whereby the gun is ready for instant action. Further, by carrying the gun in the support of the present invention, the hazardous method of carrying the gun over the shoulder or over the crook of the arm is eliminated, since the muzzle of the gun is always pointedfupwardly.l The adjustable straps permit the socket member I to be located in the center, or to the left or right of the center of the users body as desired. Further, the socket mem ber can be adjusted vertically by adjusting the harness strap lil. Since the lower portion 32 of the bracket l2 bears against the socket member It, the socket member It will be prevented from tilting outwardly as the result of the weight of The openings in the leather pad and in the bottom of the socket member serves to allow rain or melted snow to drain therethrough.
However, since many other modications and purposes of this invention will become readily apparent to those skilled in the art upon aperusal of the foregoing description, it is to be understood that certain changes in style, size, and components may be eiected without a departure from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
