FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,647, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed February 5, 1891- Serial No. 380,274. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC MILLS, a citizen of Canada, residing at Hamilton, in thecounty of WVentworth, in the Province of Ontario, have invented a new and useful Fire-Escape, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates toimprovements in fireescapes, in which a long ladder is employed having its two sides parallel and preferably of equal thickness, so as to allow for the sliding up and down of a fire-escape receptacle on said ladder; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a ready means of escape from a burning building; second, to afford facilities for the safe and quick delivery of the inmates of said building, and, third, to protect the people when in the sliding receptacle from any flames of fire which may be issuing from the windows while passing. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of an entire fire-escape in position. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section through the broken line w m.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The vertical line A indicates the face of a building, and a ladder B reared against the same at an approved angle. The said ladder may, if required, be placed in a vertical position and held rigid a short distance from the building, leaving only space sufficient for the proper Working of the sliding receptacle 0, and when said ladder is placed in the latter position the said receptacle may be reversed on the ladder, if deemed better for the purposes set forth. This receptacle is provided with slides O, for sliding and steadying purposes, and is constructed to neatly fit the outer portions of the ladder, as fully illustrated in Fig. 3. y
In reference to the manipulation of the fireescape when said ladder is in position, a pulley-block D is hooked to any desired upper round, as at E, of the ladder to suit the contingency, and the metallic cord or chain F, one end of which is fastened to the sliding receptacle at H, and the other end passing over said pulley and through said pulleyblock to any desired location, and when lowering the receptacle by means of said cord its escaping inmates are protected from fire by means of inner side O and when near the ground the bottom 0 hinged at I, may be unlatched by pulling the spring at S, which releases the vertical latch J, which is pivoted at K, the consequence being the inmates are free and the bottom ready to be adjusted to the receptacle and slid up again by means of said metallic cord.
One or two steps may be added on the front or the back of the sliding receptacle, if required, for purposes of firemen.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a fire-escape, of the sliding receptacle O, having inner protecting side 0 and bottom 0 hinged at I, a latch J, pivoted at K and constructed with slides O toslide on a ladder B by means of the pulleyblock D, and the metallic cord or chain F, substantially as described and set forth.
